Guest guest
SrI: SrImathE Ramanujaya namah: Dearest Srivaishnavas, AzhwAr after having realized that even the four faced brahmA and Rudran are not able to even comprehend the glories of PerumAL, feels completely helpless and lowly about his own jnAnam and prowess to sing in praise of Him. Thus, considering that even his (AzhwAr’s ) prabandhams are asAram and request and pleads the Lord to consider them as worthy ones with His own mercy and dayA. AzhwAr immerses himself in utter ultimate NaichyAnusanthAnam (feeling lowly about oneself?) [it is meant for us- need not be referred to AzhwAr]. Thinking of me, my disqualifications and my feeble attempt to sing, please remove the obstacles and complete the same- requests AzhwAr. vaakkuththooymaiyilaamaiyinaalE maadhavaa! unnaivaaykkoLLamaattEn naakkun^innaiyallaal_aRiyaadhu naanadhanchuvan_envasamanRu moorkkuppEsukinRaanivanenRu munivaayElum_enn^aavinukku_aaRREn kaakkaivaayilumkatturaikoLvar kaaraNaa! karuLakkodiyaanE! 1 1. Oh SarvakaaraNanE! The Causal effect of everything and everyone! Garuda dwajA! (the One who has Garuda-flag!) Madhavaa! (Sriya: Pathi) Since my words (compositions) do not have purity, I am not qualified and do not have the ability to praise You correctly and fully. (aDiyEn’s) tongue also doe not know of anyone else other than You and You alone. I am scared, as this tongue is not in my control. This VishNu chitthan rambles and babbles something- You may gent angry- But still I will not moderate or regulate my tongue. [because] people (in the world) consider goodness even in crow’s ugly crowing too. [You, being so merciful, - would also place my praise as worthy of being of considered. In order to sing, firstly one should have purity in tongue (without talking ill of others or speaking on wrong trivial issues). It is not there and hence the words are not reflecting your glories. Ok- why not you praise someone else matching your ability- you may ask. My tongue does not know anyone else. I am scared that I may sing something wrong and commit even apachAram (by mistakenly singing). Why not you stop then? My tongue is not in control. “What are you saying- the body is achEthanan and is under your control.”- you may get angry at this- I know. Though they are under my control, they act under thriguNa (Saathvika, Raajasa, thaamsa vIsEshangaL) and commit pravrtthi, nivrttthi. Though the acts of my tongue may not be satisfactory to You, I do not wish to control the same (as even crow’s ugly crowing- is also liked by people – interpreting that it crows for the bandhus – relative’s arrival). You- being Sarva kaaraNan- should also mercifully accept aDiyEn’s attempt- as You are antharyaami in me and my karaNa kaLbharams (sareeram), without Your agreement or sankalpam, I or they (the body) would not do anything. Hence please bear with me. sazhakkun^aakkodupun_kavisonnEn sangusakkaramEndhukaiyanE! pizhaipparaakilumthammadiyaarsol poRuppadhu periyOr_kadananRE vizhikkumkaNNilEnn^in_kaNmaRRallaal vERoruvarOdu_enmanampaRRaadhu uzhaikku_Or_puLLimikaiyanRukaNdaay oozhiyEzhulakuNdumizhndhaanE! 2. 2. Oh Lord, having Thirucchankhu (Conch Shell) and ThiruAzhi (ChakrA) in Your resplendent Hand! The One who had all worlds in your stomach and brought them back after cosmic dissolution (mahApraLayam)! I have composed with my tongue full of blemishes (sazhakku naakkodu). The great people- Isn’t it their nature to forgive and accept the rambling words of their illiterate servants’? There is no place other than Your place for my eyes to see? There is nobody whom my mind likes to be associated with other than those belonging to You (meaning your devotees). One more dot on deer (puLLi) skin [ where there are lots of dots] would not be an extra. [so, I can also praise You- even though it is wrong verses sung with blemish tongue? Can’t I?] nanmaitheemaikaLonRum_aRiyEn naaraNaa! ennum_iththnaiyallaal punmaiyaal_unnaippuLLuvampEsip pukazhvaananRukaNdaaythirumaalE! unnumaaRu_unnai_onRum_aRiyEn OvaadhEn^amOn^aaraNaa! enban vanmaiyaavadhu_un_kOyililvaazhum vaittaNavanennumvanmaikaNdaayE. 3. 3. [You say it is blemish verse -punkavi?- why? How can I consider You as my dAsars as you referred to in the last pAsuram- PerumAL queries are answered here] Sriya: Pathi! (ThirumaalE!) I do not know anything good or bad other than the greatest word “NaaraNA”. With a cunning, deceitful heart, I can not sing something to ask You for some materialistic fruits. I do not know also the way to perform dhyAnam uninterruptedly (meaning: bhakti yOgam). Always, at all times, I only utter ThgiruashtAksharam (Namo Narayana) and that is my strength. My strength is also living as Vaishnavan in the Divya Desam where You reside permanently. I do not know good or bad from saasthras; NaraaNa! Is all that I know. I do not if it is right or wrong to utter- if it is good or bad. If that is the case even for Manthra japam, how can I compose or sing sweet good verses? Naturally it is wrong or incorrect verses only. Also, I do not sing for someone else but You only; also it is for just for the sake of singing and not for obtaining some fruits or for materialistic pursuits. I just utter NamO NarayaNA! Ashtaakshara japam at all times. I live in your divya desam as Srivaishnavan. Hence please consider me as Your adiyaar and bear with my mistakes. nedumaiyaal_ulagEzhumaLandhaay! ninmalaa! nediyaay! adiyEnaik kudimaikoLvadhaRku_aiyuRavENdaa kooRaisORu_ivaivENduvadhillai adimaiyennumakkOyinmaiyaalE angangE_avaipOdharumkaNdaay kodumaikkanchanaikkonRu nin_thaadhai kOththavan_thaLaikOLviduththaanE! 4. 4. [You do not ask others; not You ask me for anything; what do You do for food, dress etc?- AzhwAr’s reply to PerumAL’s queries]. Oh Lord with absolutely no imperfections! VishNU! Trivikramaa! The One ho grew to measure all seven lokas! The Lord who broke the hand cuff of Your Father Vasudeva and destroyed the asurA Kamsan! Do not have doubts on me whether to consider me as Your eternal servant. I have no desire for clothing (kooRai), food (sORu). Having a thinking and contemplating on my dAsathvam (being your servant), with the thinking born in me (with Your anugraham) they (the food and clothing) will automatically come to me. You are nirdhOshan- having no imperfections. Everyone else other than You have got imperfections. You have manifested everywhere. You grew so huge as Thrivikraman and declared Your parathvam. You should bless me and consider me as Your dAsan. I do not ask for anything. I have no desire for them. Am I not eating or wearing? I do. Whether I ask or not, You are giving me always. You have been blessing this dAsan for so many births. You would do so even now. I do not want that also (meaning: no more births as well). I do not ask for anything else other than serving Your feet and nothing should be a hurdle for the same. Thus, You need to consider my pun kavi (incorrect verses) too and accept the same. [About this pAsuram: There is also one more information.- Sri Periyavacchan Pillai- vyAKhyAna chakravarrthi’s PeriyAzhwAr Thirumozhi vyAkhyAnam was eaten by ants and they were all destroyed- upto the first two line of this PAsuram and remaining from this point onwards till the end was thankfully saved. Sri Manavala mamunigaL seeing that, had written vyAkhyAnam (traditions aver) for PeriyAzhwAr Thirumozhi until the first two lines of the pAsuram and stopped at the exact word which can be continued with Sri Periyavaachaan PiLLai commentary. Sri TA Vardhan of Chennai had written very beautifully in bhakti list a couple of years ago: Given below is the URL: for your ready reference: Please read to enjoy further. http://www.ramanuja.org/sv/bhakti/archives/aug2000/0199.html ] thOttam_illavaL_aaththozhu_Odai thudavaiyumkiNaRum_ivaiyellaam vaattaminRi_unponnadikkeezhE vaLaippakamvakuththukkoNdirundhEn naattumaanidaththOdu_enakku_aridhu nachchuvaar_palar_kEzhalonRaaki kOttumaNkoNdakoLkaiyinaanE! kuncharamveezhakkombosiththaanE! 5. 5. The One who brought the BhUmA dEvi on your horn from troubled waters! The One who broke the tusker of Kuvalayaapeetam elephant! The garden, spouse, cows, the stream at the back yard – are all maintained to keep the place where Your Lotus feet are to be worshipped. They (chEthana, achEthanas) are all meant for Your Lotus feet. I do not associate myself with the worldly people here. Seeing me like this, there are also many caring and loving- for me.
