Guest guest
This is a list of 4 Western teachers of non-dualism who will be visiting the Eastern Seaboard over the next several months. Who *are* these people? Mostly householders, now teachers. I have met them all, and recommend them. Two of them are teachers of mine. They might mention scriptures in passing, but do not teach scriptures or teach through scriptures. They teach via the dialogue method, sometimes through yoga, and sometimes through a therapeutic method, that we are consciousness. Brief introductions follow, then the calendar. - FRANCIS LUCILLE -- Retired physicist and diplomat from France, has been teaching for over 20 years, first in Europe, more recently in the U.S. as well. His teacher was Jean Klein, whose teacher was Sri Atmananda of Trivandrum. Teaches through yoga, meditation, dialogue, and deep self-inquiry. Francis is my guru. - BYRON KATIE -- Former real-estate developer, has been teaching for about 8 years. No formal teacher, achieved enlightenment after the depths of a deep depression while hospitalized. She teaches from a very high viewpoint, but ironically, many of her students are people who are spiritually and psychologically hurting, and her sessions are very therapeutic. She has a method of self-inquiry called The Work, which has been a great help to many people. - CATHERINE INGRAM -- Former Buddhist practitioner and writer for yoga Journal, has been teaching for 6-10 years. The teacher she claims as one of the most important for her is Sri Punjaji ("Papaji"), whose teacher was Ramana Maharshi. She teaches through dialogue and gentle self-inquiry. - WAYNE LIQUORMAN -- Former international businessman, has been teaching for about 2 years. Author of NO WAY, FOR THE SPIRITUALY "ADVANCED," and publisher of CONSCIOUSNESS SPEAKS and other books by Ramesh Balsekar (Advaita Press). Wayne's teacher is Ramesh, whose teacher was Nisargadatta Maharaj (of I AM THAT). Wayne teaches via trenchantly humorous dialogue that is actually more like Taoism than like Advaita Vedanta. Wayne is Jon Evan's first guru (Jon is on this list), and his own teacher Ramesh was my first guru. Subsequently I have come to love and learn much from Wayne as well. ************************************************* SOME NON-DUALIST TEACHERS ON THE EASTERN SEABOARD ************************************************* ================================================= 1998 ================================================= October, 1998 ============= FRANCIS LUCILLE, New York City Dialogues Oct. 17 (10-12am and 6-8pm) Oct. 18 (10-12am; 6-8pm) Oct. 19 (8-9:30am) $100 for 3 days $50 for one weekend day $10 suggested 19th Atmananda Yoga Center 266 West 23rd, 2nd Floor, Suite A (Corner of 8th Ave.) Contact: Lisa 212-757-2094 Greg 212-734-6289 FRANCIS LUCILLE, Ottowa Retreat, Oct. 23 - Nov. 1 Contact: Raj / Nita 613-233-6644 FRANCIS LUCILLE, Dialogues Washington, DC / MD Nov. 18, 19 Kit Hallambauer 301-972-7257 November ======== BYRON KATIE, Workshop Cambridge, MA Thursday, Friday, Nov 19, 20 Harvard Divinity School Contact: Abby 617-232-9277 BYRON KATIE, Workshop New York, NY Saturday, Nov. 21 7-10pm Atmananda Yoga Center 266 West 23rd St., 2nd Floor Southeast Corner of 8th Ave. Contact: Tara 799-3651 Jennifer 917-307-1084 (or e-mail tcasso) BYRON KATIE, Workshop New York Sunday, Nov. 22 Source of Life Conference Center Contact: Mariah 505-5504 Tara 799-3651 December ======== CATHERINE INGRAM, Dharma Dialogues Cambridge/Boston Area Dec 4 & 5, 1998 January 12 &13, 1999 Retreat (non-residentail) Jan 15-17, 1999 Contact: Catherine Seo 617-576-3733 Kathy Dyer 617-864-4463 email: freedomnow ================================================= 1999 ================================================= CATHERINE INGRAM, Talks, New York Jan. 8, 9, 10, 1999 Atmananda Yoga Center 730 -930 Contact: Jim Hurley 212-246-3542 Michael Rosker 212-724-5519 CATHERINE INGRAM, Dharma Dialogues and Retreat January 12 &13, 1999, Dharma Dialogues Jan 15-17, 1999, Retreat (non-residential) Cambridge/Boston Area Contact: Catherine Seo 617-576-3733 Kathy Dyer 617-864-4463 email: freedomnow FRANCIS LUCILLE, Ottowa Retreat March 26 - Apr 5, 1999 Contact: Raj / Nita 613-233-6644 WAYNE LIQUORMAN, New York, Apr. 15-18 Talks and "Spiritually Advanced Intensive" Contact: Greg Goode 212-734-6289 WAYNE LIQUORMAN, Cambridge, MA, Apr 22-25 Talks and "Spiritually Advanced Intensive" Contact: Jon Evans 781-648-6898
Guest guest
Thanks for the list. I always like to hear about teachers who are not swamis. We have so many ways of convincing ourselves that we're not good enough. When all the teachers people revere are all monks and the students are not, that can be yet another silly barrier. When all the teachers people revere are all monks and the students >are not, that can be yet another silly barrier. This is a very good point. There are a few small trends I've noticed in the last several years among some Western non-swami teachers -- (1) democratizing the teaching process, pointing out the Teacher within the student. This is often a reaction to the evils and corruption seen in the circles of "show-biz" gurus. And also (2) instead of fixing the sufferer, or making the sufferer a happy entity, some modern Western teachers show that there is no sufferer or entity at all, just Consciousness. This second trend is not really a trend, it's what non-dualist teachers always do. But even some of the other Western teachers, who used to do New Age and psychological therapy, are now teaching non-dualist style.
