The Bauddhas talk of the five skandhas : form, feeling, perception, intellect and pre-dispositions. Most times when we talk of the "I" we are only referring to one of the skandhas or a combination of them. These skandhas are on the surface, like the waves foaming on the surface of the ocean. The platform on which they exist is the true "I". By nature our consciousness is always directed outward. When the consciousness comes into contact with the objects of the world, this results in thoughts - of desire, of Ego, of reason - or what's commonly called the mind. Sometimes we confuse ourselves with these thoughts too. That which out of which the consciousness springs from is the true "I". You cannot "know" the "I". Because consciousness cannot be turned inward or "how can the knower be known?" But there is no need to know it, because you're it! How can one have knowledge of it - for it's knowledge itself. Let go all such complex theories of the Self not being the mind, intellect, Ego etc. Sit down, close your eyes - use your intuition and draw yourself into yourself - the "I". When you know who you're, that's the beginning - viveka - to know the distinction between the real and the unreal - and then starts the problem of vairagya :-)
