Guest guest
For those who do not know : darshana - school of philosophy; samgraha - compendium. Giri, yes, the book by Rangachari was the one I was referring to - the translation of Sarva Siddhanta Samgraha. Think it's the same as Sarva Sara Siddhanta Samgraha. I'd seen it a few months back in the Newyork public library, but on Saturday when I went there to look at it, it was missing! The book as you say spans only 100 odd pages, with 4 to 6 pages devoted to each darshana. Covers Caravaka, the four schools of bauddha, jaina and the six astika schools. The vital points of each school is highlighted and then refuted, finally culminating in Advaitam. Good scholarly translation, if I remember right. I've not heard about Sarva Vedanta Siddhanta Samgraha. Could somebody (Vidya?) provide throw some historical information on this text? Another interesting text I found was Sad Darshana Samgraha. It's written circa 16th century AD by a Jaina author called Haribhadra Suri, supposedly a brahmana convert. Somebody from Bangalore University had translated it. This is a brief study of the astika and nastika schools. Talks of only the early Bauddha thought. No mention of Nyaya or Vedanta. The Jaina part of it is very good. Another book I would love to get my hands on is a translation of Prabodha Chandrodaya or the Rise of the moon of the intellect. A 16th century Advaitic drama by Krishna Mishra, which also explains in brief all the existing philosophical schools to wind up declaring the supremacy of Advaitam. There is supposed to be a Vishitadvaitic counter blast to this called Suryodhaya Samkalpa by none other than the great Vedanta Desika himself.
