Greetings Advaitins:

I received the enclosed article from a friend in India. There appears

to be a revival of Vedic chanting and people in Chennai (formerly known

as Madras), India are exploring the mystical power of healing of the

Vedas. I am posting this article for information and please make your

own judgement on the validity of claims.

Vedic Healing

==========================================

For those of you on the road to self-improvement and spiritual

rejuvenation, you may want to take a detour and head to Chennai,

(formerly

known as Madras) India, to chant and heal. And for those who want to

lose

a few pounds, unclog your arteries, breathe without nasal sprays, get

treated for any chronic ailments, alleviate stress, and then finally

cleanse your energy, you may want to follow - suit.

Chennaites are enjoying the power of healing of the Vedas in increasing

numbers. The common man had shied away from the Vedas, believed to be

revelations of the Divine, either because he assumed that one had to be

of

a particular faith or order, or that their mysticism and unfathomable

and

profound philosophies had no application in today's world.

Well, two Vedic scholars are attempting to change this and are making it

easy for the common man to comprehend the healing aspects of the Vedas

and

to apply them to modern living. The person who is revisiting Vedic

healing

is Harihar Vadhyar, 49, a scholar who has been practicing the teachings

for

more than 20 years. Vadhyar believes he was given another chance at

life

when he almost lost his life as a toddler. And he is keen to take

advantage of that. Tatwamasi Dixit, also a Vedic scholar from Chennai,

models Vedic healing for the masses. Both of them have witnessed the

healing powers of the Vedas and are convinced that this would contribute

to

a disease-free society. Having mastered the ancient scriptures while

making a living conducting rituals, Vadhyar now lives in Mumbai and

diverts

some of his earnings to Vedic research. Most of the research on Vedic

healing is drawn from Yajur Veda, one of the four Vedas. The most

powerful

of the Mantras from Yajur Veda, which also happens to be one of the

easiest

to enunciate, are chanted to invoke the Divine energy.

Vadhyar says, "I would like these findings to reach people all over the

world, especially now since we know how to model them to the workings of

modern living. The non-sectarian approach is what's even more appealing

about it." According to him, mind conditioning has mystified different

religions around the world. "All religious scriptures are easy to

follow

if one doesn't succumb to such mental confinement. The West has viewed

the

scriptures of the East as primitive and as incomprehensible as the East

itself. But Vedas have universal application, with amazing, positive

transformation," he adds.

What ails us, what heals us

Dixit and Cliff Saldanha, a prominent energy healer in Chennai, the

first

two students of Vadhyar, conduct workshops in the city on Vedic healing

to

bring out this ancient science. They have studied the impact of

specific

syllables of mantras on various organs of the body that cure chronic and

acute ailments. Dixit, 26, comes from a family of Vedic scholars. He

was

initiated into the world of Vedas at 4, and he received the title of a

Vedic Pundit (for mastering the Vedas) awarded at the age of 17 by the

state of Uttar Pradesh. He says that even though he mastered the

scriptures very young, he did lose time venturing into an accounting

career. Soon however, he realized that this was an absolute mismatch,

and

began to strengthen his skills and insights into the teachings of the

scriptures. Dixit says his innate knowledge of the Vedas made him take

a

closer look at its relevance to modern living that is bombarded by

stress-related illnesses and other ailments that ancient societies had

seldom heard of. He also went to Manila, Philippines where he trained

in

psychotherapy and energy healing.

"Many illnesses are psychosomatic in nature," says Dixit. According to

him these are the end products of childhood traumas that manifest in

adult

life. They include, but are not restricted to, phobias, obsessive

behavior,

depressions, schizophrenia, stress, panic and anxiety attacks, wild mood

swings, insomnia, addictions, and substance abuse. Many come to Dixit

for

healing, and he has diagnosed many of their illnesses to have subliminal

origins. People affected with chronic ailments including asthma, high

blood pressure, heart disease, cholesterol, migraines, chronic fatigue

syndrome, sleep disturbances, eye disorders, arthritis, diabetes, peptic

ulcers, and severe back and neck pain have benefited from this form of

healing. His ability as a clairvoyant also assists him in his role as a

healer. Among his patients afflicted with such ailments, he cites the

case

of a patient who had to be admitted to a hospital every month for severe

asthma attacks. He counseled her through a few sessions before treating

her

back to normal. Children don't seem to escape from similar ailments as

in

the case of an 8-year-old patient afflicted with wheezing problems. In

cases involving very young patients, he says, Vedic healers would have

to

chant on their behalf.

However, healing oneself is very important before treating others and

one

has to be attuned spiritually and mentally to be able to tap the higher

energies for treating others. Total dedication, love and genuine caring

for

people come into play here. But according to Dixit, it is also

important

for a healer first to self-protect against negative energy that may

sometimes disengage from the patients.

Vadhyar and Dixit realize that there may be agnostics to this concept

and

attribute insufficient knowledge and insight of the common man into the

workings of divine energy. Still, Dixit believes that even distant

healing

is possible on patients who are not very receptive to this idea. - with

limitations. One being, the healer should have a picture of the patient

at

the time of healing. Nevertheless, he says that he has gotten feedback

from people about experiencing a marked improvement in their psyche and

health.

>From Energy unto Energy

Energy healers around the world treat patients based on the premise that

there is a complex, dynamic and vital energy force around every body and

mind. The existence of which is well documented by scientists. Vital

energy

is also found in other forms, identified as the earth, air, solar, and

divine energies. Experiments conducted by the eminent Russian scientist

Semyon Kirilian using an ultra-sensitive camera showed a colorful,

radiant

energy field surrounding the physical body of human beings, animals and

plants. Further experiments of Kirlian have presented evidence that a

person's thoughts and emotions affect the color, brilliance, and

vitality

of one's energy body and that diseased energies appear first in the

energy

body before manifesting as a physical ailment. For centuries, healers

in

different cultures have used energy for healing various illnesses.

By using a 'no-touch' methodology, healers manipulate energy fields in

our

body to initiate specific biochemical changes that accelerate the body's

innate ability to prevent, alleviate, and heal a whole spectrum of

physical, emotional, and mental conditions. The methods are simple:

there

is no physical contact between the healer and the patient. Secondly,

the

healer becomes the channel to transfer positive or healthy energy that

he

assimilates. He then transfers this to replace the depleted or

unbalanced

energy of the patient. A point to be noted here is that the physical

body

is not treated at all- it is the restored energy that in turn heals the

affected organ.

While the fundamental principle in Vedic healing is the tapping of

energy,

known as prana in Sanskrit, it also encompasses specific techniques to

harness and store divine or cosmic energy to reprogram five main fields

in

our bodies so as to have a continual healing effect. The major energy

receptors or points in our bodies, called chakras in Sanskrit play the

role

of funneling this divine energy to five energy fields that serve as

powerhouses in the body. They are the Annamaya Kosha (physical body),

Pranamaya Kosha (the energy body), Vignanamaya Kosha (the conscious

mind),

Manonmaya Kosha (the sub-conscious mind) and Anandamaya Kosha

(consciousness). The energy derived from the five natural elements -

sky,

air, fire, water and earth - known as the Pancha Bhootas in Sanskrit are

invoked through chanting of mantras. For more than two decades, Vadhyar

has researched the inherent powers of mantras in Vedic healing and says

that Om Namashivaya is a mantra that can heal any illness. He has

developed a number of application methods to cure and heal various

illnesses. Vadhyar says, "harnessing and storing techniques of divine

energy from the five natural elements demand spiritual attunement.

Regular

meditation and pranayama also greatly enhance and facilitate divine

receptivity."

Forces behind healing

Undoubtedly, the combination of forces behind the power of Vedic healing

is

complex for a common man's comprehension and application. Probably,

there

is justification in calling alternative healing also as esoteric

healing.

According to Dixit, because of the abstruseness of the subject, the

first

level of these workshops doesn't draw on all the labyrinths of factors

involved in this healing. Besides bringing some understanding of the

concept of Vedic healing, these seminars are also programmed to elevate

the

mental faculties of its participants to enhance receptivity of the

divine

energy so as to self-heal and heal others.

The topics cover the role, interaction of five major forces and their

applications. They are - the energies from the five elements, five major

chakras, five fingers, five syllables of the Om Namashivaya mantra, and

five geometric symbols. The human body serves as a canvas for the

representation of the five elements. The bones are representations of

the

earth element; blood, chemicals, sperm, urine, and bone marrow

represents

the water element. Similarly, stomach represents the fire; oxygen

represents air, and the space that is vacant represents the ether. In a

cyclic fashion, these elements are pre-dominant in the atmosphere for

every

2 hours and 24 minutes during a 24-hour period. Depending on the time of

sunrise, one can determine as to what element will be abundant and in

which

direction. As an illustration, two samples are provided in this simple c

hart based on the assumption that the sun rises at 6:00.

Time, Element & Direction Chakra & Location Finger Mantra

Symbol Benefits

6:00-8:24 SKY, North Visuddha Throat Thumb & Index Om Ham

Namaha Circle

with a dot at the center Respiratory illnesses are cured.

Develops and

strengthens mental clarity in speech and writing.

10:48- 1:12 FIRE, South-East Manipura Solar plexus (central cavity of

the

lungs) Middle & Thumb Om Ram Namaha A red or orange triangle with a

dot at

the center Destroys all negative thoughts, and depression.

Strengthens

will power, develops inner peace

In the first example in the chart above, the energy from the element-

sky

will be pre-dominant in the prescribed time. So, one should face north

and

chant the pertaining mantra by joining the index fingers of both hands

with

both thumbs of both hands so as to form a circle. In this, the index

finger

is associated with the syllable Ya. Then, one should proceed to

visualize a

light gray or smoke color light emanating from the symbol, a star, to

the

energy point or Chakra located in the heart. This Chakra harbors deep

love, happiness, inner peace, compassion, mercy and kindness. For

healing

any ailment, visualization plays a rather crucial role to restore the

imbalance of the energy in the body. The ailments are dispensed with

faster. Doing pranayama in the direction indicated maximizes the

benefits

of energizing, activating, and restoring balance to our mental,

emotional

and physical conditions, as well as storing energies in the five fields.

Vadhyar has identified several such combinations of syllables

corresponding to each of the five elements. For instance, he says that

he

now has results of the power of chanting the syllable Sam on estranged

families. Of course, a Vedic teacher would have to prescribe this to

have

the desired results. Vadhyar has also done extensive research in food

therapy and says that these energies can also be stored in herbal

powders

for a period of 2 years. His extensive research includes the impact of

energy from metals, plants, letters, geometric signs and designs,

planets,

sound, colors and direction for better storing and healing the body,

mind

and soul. Following his study on the effect of metals on the body, he

has

devised two coins that when placed on the affected organ, while chanting

and visualization, arrests the illness. A timer that he has designed for

those who spend most of their time at work is aimed to be a reminder for

practice during the day. This concept of healing would also be very

helpful to combat work-related stress and to create goodwill among

co-workers and peaceful ambience in today's workplace," he says.

Under working the Overworked

The corporate sector in the city of Chennai, which is used to waking up

to

the aroma of fresh brewed famous South Indian coffee, is beginning to

wake

up to the benefits of Vedic healing. Commuters trudging their way to

work

in chaotic and pollution filled streets often have found their breathing

and energies clogged even before they reached their work place. Once

there, they have found relief in training offered by Dixit. He applies

Vedic healing, pranayama, and meditation to stress management workshops

hosted by a national company in Chennai. Srinivasan, its finance

manager

says that there has been 100% receptiveness to this form of healing and

has

helped a lot of their employees in personality development and

maintaining

mental equilibrium. He says, "our employees used to bring traffic

related

stress to work and it stayed with them all day. Now, I see a big

difference in the work attitudes of many of them. For one, goodwill and

tolerance level of employees has gone up. The nature of the business

creates a high-pressure environment where tempers and irritability are

rampant. The workshop has helped us acquire inner composure and positive

attitudes and the best part is, it is offered right at the workplace."

Staying Clean in a Toxic World

As part of the training, Vedic healing workshops also incorporate the

importance of inner cleansing or detoxification of the system. Vadhyar

says, "this can't be stressed enough. The purpose is to cleanse the

over

worked glands of toxins and recharge them with divine energy. Fasting

every

15 days will help one do that. It is nature's oldest, safest, and

inexpensive way of treating a disease. A weak elimination system

harbors

these waste products that get recycled inside the body. The energy

released gets trapped and start moving upward affecting higher mental

faculties and slowing down spiritual empowerment and health."

Toward this end, Vadhyar and Dixit have come up with a Vedic analysis of

each form of food. Their studies highlight how the consumed food in the

body gets divided into three parts and also shed light on the procedures

to

be adopted to send mental commands to the food we eat. For example, when

the gross form of food gets eliminated, the subtle form reaches the skin

and its subtler form - the mind. In effect, the food we eat has an

impact

on our mental health. Dixit says that the Vedas not only talk of the

influence of food on one's mental state, but also illustrate techniques

on

how to command the mind to draw energy from other glands. He fasts every

15

days and on the day of fasting he consumes only water and says that he

goes

about his day with a mind that is very calm and a body that doesn't

experience any fatigue that day or even the next. This has to be done

very

gradually and methodically, and this is where the difference between

starving and fasting, has to be understood. "It is a question of mind

control and will power," he says. He has made this possible by adapting

the techniques of tuning and commanding the water to energize the body

when

it sends a signal for food. For those who are keen, he is willing to

train

them on how to send specific commands to the food on the route you want

it

to take.

The New You

It wasn't until a few decades ago that people began either switching to

alternative healing or embracing it as a complement to modern medicine.

Whatever the trend may have been, they wouldn't have given a fleeting

thought to cleansing, energizing, and rejuvenation aspects of healing on

their psyche as well. But today, lifestyles and trappings of a frenzied

world have brought about a change in people's attitude toward health and

they want more from holistic healing. They expect to see a positive

transformation in their physiology and psychology - for a 'stressful'

reason. Even though many may have walked away from the medicine

cabinets

in search of ancient therapies, they have realized that their stress

level

has been in step with their lives. So, it is no chilling revelation

that

instead of finding themselves in a vortex of stress, anxiety, and

consequently depression, people aspire for inner peace, happiness and a

stress-free lifestyle to savor the simple pleasures of life. The good

news

is, there are signs of hope once they become receptive to this novel

form

of healing - by opening up minds and letting the elements of nature take

care of the body and soul - the way the Creator intended.

Excerpts of Q and A with Dixit

J: What are the limitations of Vedic healing?

T: This system aims to strengthen mental faculties and intensify it to a

level from which it treats the physical body. However, for one to

benefit

from Vedic healing one has to mentally be receptive to treatment. The

advantages of this form of healing far outrun the limitations. Agreed

that

we are talking about the incorporeal here, how can any one explain inner

peace, happiness and the feeling of being healthy as a whole -

physically,

mentally, emotionally and spiritually? Having an open mind will help to

a

large extent.

J: Since you have trained in other forms of energy healing, how is it

different from Vedic healing? Have you personally benefited from this?

T: The Vedas do talk about energy in a lot more comprehensive manner

than

what is actually applied today. It also goes one step further to

harness

the higher energy to have a continual effect on one's body and mind.

Frankly, I wouldn't be practicing it or training others if I hadn't.

When

I was 9, my mother was bed-ridden without any signs of recovery. The

doctors had also given up hope. It was then, that my father a Vedic

Pundit

himself, who administered Vedic healing with the help of other Vedic

priests and my mother recovered to the amazement of doctors.

J: What explanation would you give somebody if he said that all that a

person experiences is a placebo effect from this form of healing?

T: We realize that there may be more than one doubting Thomas out there.

The feedback and testimonials from patients who have healed don't concur

with the "placebo' effect in this healing. The power of chanting can't

be

emphasized enough.

J: Does a person have to practice Hinduism to benefit from this? And how

about for someone who has no knowledge of Sanskrit?

T: There are absolutely no religious constraints. It can be chanted by

anyone and that is what's appealing about it. Of course, a person who

has

knowledge of the language can relate to it faster and even attempt to

understand the other mantras and teachings. Also, a person will be able

to

tap the higher energies better if he also practices yoga, meditation,

pranayama etc. on a regular basis.

J: Everyone these days talk about how stressed his or her lives have

become. How does this healing help to combat this problem?

T: There are particular syllables in Vedic chanting that helps one calm

down considerably. Stress is something that can easily be alleviated if

a

person is trained to develop an unconditional thought structure and also

to

measure events beyond the physical limit. For instance, fear and

anxiety

of the future and regrets from the past can create situations or

conditions

that causes immense stress for some. This restricts personal growth and

happiness. We prescribe specific Vedic chanting and meditation for

people

to combat stress.

J: Do you undermine the practice of modern medicine? In your opinion,

what

do you think are the medical world's views on this form of healing?

T: No, I don't. However, modern medicine treats only the symptoms and

not

the root cause of the problem. Any alternative healing is a complement

to

modern medicine. For instance, if one is in agonizing pain from broken

ribs or is suffering for a severe heart attack, it's obvious that one go

to

the hospital first. But, ideally, this should not be the case for other

chronic ailments. One of my patients suffering from acute lower jaw

pain

for 8 years had consulted a physician, a dentist, a neurologist, an

acupuncturist etc. She had x-rays and MRI taken and yet the problem

couldn't be identified. When she came to see me, I diagnosed this to be

a

spinal misalignment on her upper back. I treated her for this in 8

sessions

and she is back to normal today. Similarly, heart valves can be cleansed

and energized avoiding any unnecessary surgery. Importantly, you will

not

be declared a heart patient for life. Practitioners of modern medicine

around the world have reckoned that alternative healing methods can't be

dispensed with. I have had patients in Chennai who practice modern

medicine, who come to me for healing.

J: While yoga and meditation have become so popular, why has the concept

of

Vedic healing taken time and how can this be popularized?

T: Many aspects of Vedic healing are analyzed during intense Vedic

chanting. They become even more prominent while performing rituals that

involve offerings to the Divine (called havan in Sanskrit) and these

involve considerable amount of time and money. We are in the process of

compiling the studies from plant energy healing. This similarly has

taken

considerable amount of time, but it will be worth the wait.

Yoga and meditation had also been buried for a long time for the common

man

to realize its value. What we are talking about is not a totally new

concept. We are only revisiting the Veda and programming it for the

society. People already know the treasures hidden in Indian scriptures.

The mysticism aspect of Vedic chanting has to be minimized for better

accessibility. People will have to understand that like yoga and

meditation, this also has a secular application. They aren't new

discoveries. They are time-tested proven formulas for self- healing and

healing others. The other sciences like yoga, meditation and ayurveda

already enjoy immense popularity in the West. This is again a medicinal

science - another path to healing. So, why should this be any

different?

Reaching out to the society through workshops is definitely one way to

go.

PROFILE OF TATWAMASI DIXIT

Tatwamasi Dixit, 26, is a Vedic scholar from Chennai, formerly Madras,

India. He was initiated into the learning of Vedic and ancient Indian

scriptures at the age of four in Benares, where he grew up. His father,

Srinivasa Dikshitar, was a renowned Vedic scholar who became the

Aasthanavidwan (chief scholar), at Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt under His

Holiness Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati at the young age of 30. His

life

was one of intense discipline and dedication to the mastering of Vedas

and

the pursuit of spirituality.

For generations, members of the Dikshitar family have been stalwarts and

authorities of the four Shastras and the Vedas. Tatwamasi, in continuing

with tradition, went through rigorous training schedules in

understanding

and mastering them at a very young age. Gaining mastery of the Vedas

has

helped him to get a deep insight and understanding of the Indian ethos,

culture, and thinking. This insight led him to believe in the power of

Vedas on the common man in his pursuit of excellence and professional

success, happiness and peace. He went to Manila in Philippines to master

pranic healing. This helped him combine the Vedic analysis of energy and

body language with that of pranic healing to offer solutions for total

mental and physical health.
