Namaste.

I recently came across the following quote attributed to Michael Jordan

(the famous basketball player) at one of his news conferences.

"Success isn't something you chase. It's something you have to put forth

the effort constantly. Then maybe it'will come when you least expect it.

Most people don't understand that."

That is a profound statement. Change the word "success" to

"self-realization" in the above quote and we are with our all-too-familiar

understanding. Michael Jordan is success-personified in the materialist

world. Although success in the materialist world and Self-realization are

not in the same level, they are not mutually exclusive and the recipe

stated above by Mr. Michael Jordan for success applies equally well for

Self-realization.

On the surface, it seems to be so. An athlete puts effort into being a

capable athlete and the attitude is one of passion, attachment and

expectation. If the effort is successful, success is guaranteed because

sports is a matter of business. The criteria are quantitative so progress is

known and success is only a matter of waiting. In Self-realization, the

effort is to be without effort, a matter of equanimity and detachment. There

is nothing to compare the effort with so one never knows when to recognize

what never was lost. If one's practice isn't free from expectation it will

never happen.

Only in a few cases material success and Self-realization can coincide. In

order to get promoted, one has to compete, in order to sell products, one

has to be on an equal footing with a competitor who for instance uses

misleading advertising that barely escapes prosecution. In a profession

where one is independent and competition is "fair" or regulated, there is no

discrepancy between material success and Self-realization. Another point is

the kind of work. For an artist, work is Oneness of performer, the act of

performing and the work of art being created. This "mode" of working is

beneficial to both material success and Self-realization.

Greetings Murthygaru:

Jordan' quotation reminds me a quotation from Fontanelle (1657-1757):

"Happiness is as a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our

grasp, but when we sit quietly, may alight upon us."

Jordan's statement implicitly contains the essence of Karma Yoga in

the most subtlest form! Self-realization is automatic for the

True-Seeker! The True-seeker of success, happiness and

self-realization will certainly attain the goal! The answer to the

question - Who is the True-seeker, is known only to the True-Seeker. I

certainly do not know the answer to that question!

There is a famous saying " Success comes before work only in the dictionary".
