I consider myself so fortunate that by subscribing to this list , I am able to read and reflect upon such profound statements. Even with my limited knowledge of our scriptures, I can say that the concept of various levels of divinity is totally un-advaitic. I would like to take a guess here as to why a MahAtmA such as Shri Ramakrishna would say something to that effect in the quoted anecdote. I think he was being compassionate to the questioner who might have assumed that the "clayness" of clay was somehow different from and inferior to the divinity of the prophet. It was the greatness of the prophet to show him that in fact he has something special in his own self and it is for everyone to see. Further, Mr. Gerchemez wrote " a lump of clay cannot become aware of its true nature- it is bound completely to samsara" Upon reflection, this does not appear plausible. Bondage seems to be a function of mind and the lump having no mind has no bondage or liberation. Life forms, as they evolve in complexity seem to develop the concept of ego and the subsequent desires of self-preservation and self-propagation. This brings us to the question : why would Shankara say that the human birth is the pinnacle of divine expression? A conscious journey is an enjoyable journey. Wise people have said that the joy lies in the manner of travel and not in its destination. The human mind has the faculty and the freedom to make its journey enjoyable. There lies its greatness.
