Western and Indian thought

Hi Everyone,

This is sort of a "counterpoint" to Ram's comparison of Western and Indian

thought.

Indian thought is slowly but inexorably penetrating the mind of the West.

Unfortunately, the highly sophisticated, energetic and blinding samsara of

Western thought is penetrating Indian thought (and the thought of the rest

of the world) much more rapidly. There is a very real threat that these

negative elements of Western thought may damage the rich spiritual

tradition of India, and in the worst case, may in fact completely

"westernize" India in the long term (it has happened in other countries).

I think we need to be aware of both the "good" and the "bad" happening. It

is good for the West that the nondual traditions of India are starting to

have an effect on the mass consciousness. But I worry for India. The

sheer energy and sophistication behind Western thought, ignorant though

much of it may be, presents a threat to India and all cultures of the world.

Hari OM,

Tim
