Guest guest
Comparisons between East and West in a list such as was presented can be misleading and over simplified ... We need to remember that there have been notable exceptions to the comparisons ... such as the influence of Neoplatonism in the Renaissance; the Sufi movement in Islam; various splinter movements that survived in the Middle East, Hesychast movement in Eastern Orthodoxy; Kabbalism; Gnostic traditions... All of these I think flew in the face of a lot of the typical spirituality of the West... It may also be an error I think to attribute the modern, technological ethos to Western spirituality... Spirituality in the West is suffering or waning as all societies have when meeting modern society...Yes its true modern technology developed in the West but that does not make it the product of western spirituality... - Art Gregory lgregory

I would just like to clear up that I was not attributing the problems in the West to Western spirituality, but to Western samsara (the consumerist culture, making a god of technology, etc). You mention that Western religions are waning in the face of science, but science and religion are not so different - both consist of a search for truth. I'd also like to point out that Western society has deteriorated significantly along with its religions. Dualistic religions though they may be, without them people are turning to darker things, as there is no meaning or purpose to life for many human beings in the West. Especially in the United States, the culture is incredibly sophisticated, but underneath that sophistication is one of the loudest wails of suffering in the history of mankind.
