Guest guest
I am wondering if list members are aware of the latest and most serious violation of the human rights of Chinese citizens in the past week. I read this story a few days ago and was unaware of it being carried in any other services, networks, etc. in other parts of the world: In a story to the LA Times in the 7/23/99 edition I read about the suppression of the Falun Gong sect in China by the ruling Communist Party. The regime according to the story was "shocked ... with their loyalty to an exiled leader and their formidable powers of mass organization." Falun Gong has its origins in Daoism and Buddhism and numbers about two million adherents in China according to authorities there. The followers of Falun Gong meet to "channel different types of energy within the body" and "... to cultivates a spinning Wheel of Law composed of energy in the lower abdomen." Falun Gong was spread through cell phones and the internet and peacefully demonstrated in April in large numbers for official recognition by the regime which demonstration apparently has generated the response in the past week of beating the sects followers, arresting leaders and casting aspersions on the founder of the sect Li Hongzhi who now lives in the US. Evidence of the poor human rights record of the Chinese regime was also seen in its handling of millions of Tibetans in the practice of their religion since the occupation of Tibet. I would urge that all Chinese goods be boycotted and that letters of protest of such activities by the current regime in China be addressed to representatives in National government as well as UN headquarters. - Arthur Gregory lgregory

There's *always* something like this going on in the world, and location and nationality has nothing to do with it. The perpetual conflict and suffering within human beings is reflected in outward behavior toward one another and the rest of the world. I don't even bother to watch the news anymore - it's all "bad news." The devil is not in the "particulars," it's in the ignorance of the human race to who they are and why they are living. If I were to write a letter to the communist chinese regime, I would send the Astavakra Samhita translated into Chinese, or something... little good that it would do. Of course, they would use the Bhagavad Gita as justification to war. There's nothing the "individual" mind at war with itself likes better than to externalize that war to "others."
