Actually, they're artifacts of the subtle body, of which the nervous system is an artifact. When death occurs, the impressions of the mind (personality) are carried to the next life, if there is not realization, and there *is* evidence that such impressions are buried deep in the subconscious mind (past-life regressions performed by skilled hypnotherapists).
