I was told about a Gita discussion already in place with Onelist, so I mailed

him the info. As far as I know, being that he lives in a tiny town in SC, he

wanted a group online. Thank you for your response.

Hari Om Lesley:

You have raised an open end question. If you are refereing to Gita Satsangh

class discussions, they are offered all over the world by Chinmaya Mission,

Arsha Vidya Gurukulam and other organizations in big cities. If you are more

specific, we may be answer you: Does your friend seek Email discussion or

interested in attending Satsangh? Where is he/she located?

Gita is quite important to understand Advaita Philosophy and I request some

volunteers to start an Email discussion on Gita Chapters. Actually people who

have undergone formal trainings such as Jaishankarji or Kalyanji could take a

lead to start such a discussion. Every week 2 to 4 verses with translation can

be posted and members can interact each other with their thoughts. Exchanging

personal experiences relevant to the messages of Gita can help the members to

get the full benefits. I hope to see some positive response from members.

If none takes a lead, I am quite confident that Sadanandaji when he returns back

from India in March, 2000 will certainly start Gita discussion.

If your friend has any specific question related to any specific verses, the

list moderators and the members will be more than happy to give their response.

Namaste

It will be great if Kalyanji and Jaishankarji could take the lead. Thanks.

Advaitin Satsang.

Pranams.

Om Namo Narayana!

(praying to you from spiritual Antartica)

It is a welcome suggestion from Shri Ramji about commentaries on Gita. I

suggest to include shri Madhav's name also in it. He is formally trained in

Chinmayaranyam Ashram. Besides he also has a modern orientation to life by

being a IT manager. From my personal exprience, he can co-relate many day to

day problems with specific verses in Gita. He would announce the chapter and

verse number and then proceed to recite it in sanskrit and explain it in

English and then connect it to the problem being discussed. This makes Gita

highly relevant from day to day context.

I think Swami Chinmayananda was one of the first, to actively propogate

Hinduism through English language discourses which made it comprehensible

to middle class of the Hindu society, who have by and large, lost touch with

original sanskrit version. I recollect Shri Madhav telling me once, that

Swami's first lecture was an audience of just 3. The movement caught on and

he inspired a number of other spiritual VIPs and gave respectability to the

concept of Ashrams and their link to modern day Indian society.

We respect, appreciate and concede that Vedas and Shastras must be learnt, in

the way they are ordained to be, in patashalas and Gurukulams. Perhaps it is

equally important, that some of the Gnanis atleast, must share their

spiritual wealth with, much more numerous poor cousins. Fundamental Research

is important in Mathematics and Science as well as in Spiritual matters. But

applied research is equally relevant to bring that knowledge to day to day

practice. I once read that "Theory is nothing but Best Practice". I think

this is true in many walks of life. For every learned person like Shri

Jayashankarji or Mr.Greg or Shri Madhav, there are thousands of ignorant

Rajans and I am afraid that this ratio will be there for some time to come.

Incidentally there is a lot of discussion going on about "Desires". If one

were to quantify the concept in a scale of 1 to 5, then one can gradually

decrease its intensity to reach to zero rather than 1/0 situation of just

giving it up. Also there is in my opinion, an equally opposite scale from -5

to -1 which is "Hate" which is antidesire. Generally speaking what I

understood from the discussions is that one should strive to reach 0 which

is Nondesire and Nonhate. This is reached by training and is not a natural

state. That 0 exists alone is not enough, one should also have some

meaningful idea how to get there in reasonable amount of time. Or have I got

it wrong?
