What's involved is not really the dissolution of a separate, individual, ego-based self... but rather the dissolution of the false idea that there ever was such a critter in the first place! Guest guest
neo [dennisjg] Friday, December 17, 1999 9:04 AM advaitin-owner Neo, An Introduction Since an introduction is required (seems strange) I will give a short introduction and spiritual history: My spiritual origins were in Christianity. I have been a spiritual seeker, for lack of a better phrase, since I was a small boy. In my college years I became an atheist, an agnostic, and then I was introduced to religious concepts from the East through courses and I began the meditation practice of Transcendental Meditation. Since my teens I have had a series of out of the body experiences. I have had several experiences of ego loss. I also have had several experiences of seeing the world as one. I have had two direct experiences of God. These are all just experiences, however. I have been on many retreats including those with Ram Dass, Jack Kornfield, and more recently silent retreats with Gangaji. Favorite books include Jack Kornfield's "A Path With Heart", "A Course in Miracles" , as well as Gangaji's books and the books of her lineage. I have currently been reading some of the books of Thomas Mertin. As you may know he was a Catholic monk. For many years I thought Enlightenment was something to be obtained, some state of mind to be achieved. It is only in the past year or two that I have come to realize that what is necessary is the dissolution of my separate, individual, ego based self. I hope this will act as an introduction and a short spiritual autobiography. I have noticed that many on the spiritual path will adopt a new name. This may be useful in helping to break the bonds of the identity one has had most of their life. The movie "The Matrix" has become my favorite movie. I like the name neo because it means new. In addition, with the letters rearranged it spells one. I have therefore adopted, for now, the name neo to replace my given name of Dennis. Peace, neo Greetings, Welcome to the list.
