Guest guest
Dear advaitins, The following is a mail I sent to the multifaith list I moderate, StudyCircle on 26th June 1999 with the subject header "Krishna". I always felt Jesus portrayed compassion, Buddha was wise, but Krishna was COOL! I also would like to add to this article that in the Tao Te Ching, it is mentioned that a person who is ONE with the TAO has qualities like being kind-hearted like a grandmother but dignified like a king. Who else has these but Krishna!!?? ------------------ This is actually a reply to Dushyant's writing on Krishna. I agree with him completely about the interesting nature of Krishna's personality and I am bewildered to notice Glenn's attraction to Krishna's personality. I just like to add my penny's worth to this. The word "krishna" is often translated as 'one who is attractive'. Among all the different names and terms attributed to Krishna, this is perhaps one that summarizes everything. It implies the attraction to everything about Him, including his (I will use small case, 'h' as it's easier to type) physical stature, but more importantly his personality and character. If God manifested on Earth, how would his character and personality be? If you explore Krishna's c & p, you would be in wonder. Is He closer to be the ascetic or sage-like? Is he closer to the kingly regal type? Is he closer to the philosopher or warrior or statesman or prophet or mediator etc. type? You will find no accurate comparison. Why? Is it because He is something else? Is it because he encompasses all this? The answer is: Wrong! It is because he encompasses all these and beyond, yet is found in all these. Does he have a multiple-personality problem? NO! Definitely not! He has ONE Personality that is speaks everything. He is often described to be the perfect son, perfect king, perfect warrior, perfect statesman etc. Srila Prabhupada calls Him, "Supreme Personality of Godhead" and Meher Baba has said before that Krishna could of also portrayed himself to be the perfect womanizer, perfect robber etc. if he wanted, but did not do so, because he wanted to set an example and not shock the people. To a person who is omnipotent and not bound by any physical nor metaphysical laws like Krishna but has them at his fingertips can do anything he likes. Yet, to a person who has everything and beyond, does he have the need or greed for any power, wealth or belonging? Nope! It is all a Divine Comedy in Krishna's turf. To a person who manifests in everything and everyone and experiences everything being their Self/Spirit or AtmA, yet being omniscient and knowing Reality from mAya, when does such a person rejoice or suffer? Where does the need arise for such a person to torture or do harm to others when he himself is manifested in the torturers of the world? Yes, he tortures, he redeems, he is also the subject of torture and redemption, is there any difference? If this is the case, what is the need to have him on Earth anyway if it makes no difference? On Earth, He portrayed everything that would reveal the nature of a Divine Reality. He has done everything normal and paranormal. From leading armies to raising a mountain with his little finger. As a child, he was very playful and showed divine revelation in childish pranks. He taught spiritual truths in mere pranks. His personality of being Spiritually Attractive was shown through his form and his playing of the flute in such a captivating way that the gopis surrounded him. His personality attracted everyone - men, women, children, kings, sages and warriors. They were all drawn to that blissful outlook, which is happy and playful; yet serious with wisdom, romantically attractive to the core to women; yet with a sagely, spiritual outlook, regal and grand; yet close to the poor (like Kuchela), magnificent and regal; yet humble and with piety (He washed the feet of Duryodhana before!). He is approachable by great kings and sages, yet always accessable to the poor, the old and children, why!? even to the evil folk and to his enemies. With the harmony he draws to the apparent contradictions, Lao Tzu would of sworn Krishna was the Tao!. His playing of many roles is aptly mentioned by Arjuna: "Therefore, O adorable Lord, I seek Your grace by bowing down and prostrating my body before You. Bear with me as a father to his son, as a friend to a friend, and as a husband to his wife, O Lord." (BG 11.44) Being the image of perfection, He has described himself in the Bhagavad Gita in chapter 10, as wisdom in the wise, strength in the strong, sense of fraudulence in the frauds(!) etc. and his personality is like the accumulation of all this. Like the rays of the sun covering waves of all frequencies in the electromagnetic band. He portrays everything.. from a nice friend, to compassionate guru, to a fierce cruel form which is Time, the all-devourer (in Chap 11). Apart, from the example of deeds, His presentation of the Bhagavad Gita to the world, which was not meant to be a scripture originally, but merely a conversation. Reading the Gita, you will find it containing all paths to Liberation in a gist, from delusion to surrender to Krishna to realization of Arjuna. It is a spiritual manual. However, the goal is to realize the Krishna found in your heart and making you the Arjuna. Imagine the Lord in your heart telling you, "Do not grieve, O Arjuna, you are born with divine qualities." ("If not, you won't be talking to me anyway!"- adds Ruben). That's slightly deviating from the topic from Krishna, THE Person. I think I am exhausted writing about Krishna, since I know I can never REALLY describe Him anyway but I like to reiterate that is God were to be born as a man fully concious of the(/His) Divine Reality, his personality, attitude and sense of humour has to match Krishna's. Krishna would definitely be the personification of Lao Tzu's Tao and Buddha's State of Enlightenment. Although I disagree with Dushyant's latest statement of superstition, I would say that even at the same time there is a metaphysical destination of everyone, Krishna tells us to live to the moment, being aware at all times, the Spiritual Reality. He tells to surrender everything to Him, yet DO everything in line with Karma Yoga. Karma Yoga is the attitude of your actions, Bhakti Yoga is the attitude of your psyche, Jnana Yoga is the attitude of your thinking and intellectual endeavours and Dhyana Yoga the attitude of your silence and contemplation. YES! Krishna is the man with _the_ attitude! OM namo bhagavathe vaasudevaaya! -- Warmest regards, Ruben rubenn _____________ StudyCircle: Mailing List on multifaith religion & spirituality see http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Troy/9261/studycircle/
