Guest guest
I originally sent this to my list in response to an euthanasia thread and since it involved Bhagavad Gita verses, I am posting it here too, as it is relevant to current discussions of advaitin. -Ruben. ------------------------- Dear Friends, In the Vedas, prarabdha karma refers to long term or permanent karma. (unchangable by individual effort, only by exceptional Divine Will) An example is time of death. The body has a fixed time before death. Jesus and others possessed the Divine Will to change this and resurrect others. The Vedas say that if a person's time is not yet up, even a thousand spears cannot kill him but if his time is up, even a blade of grass can kill him. Therefore, concerning those who commited suicide, murdered and died by euthanasia - if their time was not up, they would not of died. Even if it seemed as though they or someone else *killed* them or they killed themselves, it is true that they or others were just instruments in fulfilling destiny according to the Vedas. If one should die at a certain time, that would happen as scheduled and the nearest agent (could your own self or physical illness or murderer or accident etc.) will facilitate the death. Of course, the murderer could be charged in court for the *MOTIVE* but not for *causing* the death if following Hindu Dharma. Since all sins and acts, whether right or wrong is judged solely by the motive or intention only. See: The Supreme Lord said: "I am death (as Time), the mighty destroyer of the worlds, out to destroy. Even without your participation all the warriors standing arrayed in the opposing armies shall cease to exist. Therefore, you get up and attain glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a prosperous kingdom. All these (warriors) have already been destroyed by Me (as Time). You are only an instrument, O Arjuna." (Bhagavad Gita 11.32-33) Here, Arjuna's *motive* should be to perform his *duties* as a warrior, not for cold-blooded undharmic murder. Arjuna was unduly worried that it is he who is causing the deaths which is absurd by Hindu dharma. (BTW, wars of ancient India was only between armies in a battlefield and does not involve women, children and innocent people. All participants are trained fighters or trained at using certain weopans, not vulnerable laymen. War begins at dawn and ends at dusk. There are rules of dharma to be followed, e.g. don't kill an unarmed person, no foulplay e.g. archer against swordsmen, don't attack a retreating person etc. If they are not followed, then it is undharmic and therefore *WRONG*. There were such cases in the Mahabharata War but not by Arjuna.) Similarly, entrance into heavan or hell is not based on *beliefs* but faith i.e. a REAL relationship with God, not merely name sake praise. Or entrance to heavan or hell is the cumulation of total good or bad actions, based on motives and intention, more importantly. According to Hindu scriptures, no one enters heavan because s/he is a Hindu or Christian or Muslim or worships Vishnu or Shiva, but by the purity of the Heart alone. Purity of the Heart, brings purity of the mind. Purity of the mind (of thoughts) brings purity in actions and words. Purity in actions and words are the basis for making the world and environment pure. -- Warmest regards, Ruben ruben _____________ "God does not appreciate external pomps and exhibitionistic behaviour.
