dear friends---

there is a beautiful poetical translation of the gita called 'the song

of god'--it has 2 very good prefaces one by aldous huxley and the other by

christopher isherwood......i write below some lines from isherwood's intro'

which i found very helpful::

"Arjuna is not a free agent. The act of war is upon him;it has evolved out of

his previous actions. He cannot choose.'if ,in your vanity, you say 'i will not

fight',your resolve is vain.your own nature will drive you to the act.'At any

given moment in time we are what we are;and our actions express that

condition. We cannot run away from our actions because we carry the condition

with us.On the highest mountain, in the darkest cave,we must turn at last and

accept the consequences of being ourselves.Only through this acceptance can we

begin to evolve further. We may select the battleground .We cannot avoid the

battle.

How ,in this complex world are we to know what our own duty is?there is no

greater problem.Yet,somehow we have to find our position and make our

stand. For the majority ,much self-analysis ,much trial and error, would seem to

be the only way. But,having found that position we must accept it in it's

entirety."

Greetings Devendra:

Thanks for bringing Arnold's book to the attention of

the List. Arnold's translation was also greatly

admired by Mahatma Gandhi. Arnold's "Song of the God"

is available for donwload at:

http://www.sirtis.org.uk/gita/

The poems are written in simple english and the

translation does bring the intended essence of gita.

I have glanced through several chapters and I found it

quite interesting and useful.

Arjuna's distress and his desperate attempt to get

Lord Krishna's attention just illustrates our daily

struggle in life. We want to insulate ourselves from

"right and wrong, good and evil," and always look

for outside help for protection. The entire Gita

suggests that the knowledge of SELF will give us the

necessary and sufficient insulation from guilt feeling

that we face while conducting our actions. According

to Shankara's advaita philosophy, all such guilt

feelings occur due to our ignorance of SELF.

We seem to be doing exactly the opposite - We detach

our identity from the SELF and attach it to the

trinity of body, mind and intellect. Our pain and

sufferings are due to self-inflicted wounds and are

not caused by external objects!

regards,

Ram Chandran
