Vivekananda, by His Eastern and Western Disciples;Advaita Ashrama, Mayavati, 5th ed. 1979; pp. 11-12: "....One night Bhuvaneshvari [sw.'s mother] had a vivid dream. .... In her dream she saw the Lord Shiva rouse Himself from His meditation and take the form of a male child who was to be her son........ ....The household members wanted to name the baby Durgaprasad, but when they asked the mother, she looked into the child's eyes, and said "Let his name be Vireshvar! So shall he be called!.... ...He was a naughty child..beyond control. ...Finally Bhuvaneshvari found that if she poured cold water on the head of the screaming child, chanting the name of Shiva in his ears at the same time, or if she threatened him with 'Shiva will not let you go to Kailas if you do not behave.'he would quiet down and become his eager, joyous self again. ....It was after such scenes that the mother used to say,'I prayed to Shiva for a son, and He has sent me one of His demons!'......." Guest guest
Dear Advaitins, I thought I will side track from the philosophical discussions raging at the moment and post some small stories from the lives of great saints. I trust everybody will like them and hope Ramji and the list moderators have no objection. I would like to post on the topic of how many devotees and admirers of Swami Vivekananda saw him as Lord Shiva. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In Dakshineswar , after the coming of the future monastic diciples of Sri Ramakrishna, many a times Narendra nath and others used to spend the night at the temple since the journey to Calcutta was long. On one such occasion Tarak Maharaj (later Swami Shivananda) and Narendra nath decided to stay back at the temple complex and leave the next morning. In the middle of the night, Tarak was suddenly woken up by the presence of a mysterious bluish light filling the room. He looked everywhere to see the source of this light. To his amazement he saw that the figure of Narendranath had dissappeared and in his place were many figures of Lord Shiva in the form of a child. Thinking himself not pure enough to be present at such a magnificient scene, he quitely removed himself from the place. Next day morning , he reported the full thing to Narendranath, who just laughed it away. Source: - Ramakrishna Vijayam After Swami Vivekananda's return from the west and after the setting up of the Belur monastery, Swamiji used to spend time time at the Belur Math. One one ocassion he asked his disciple to massage his legs as they were aching. The disciple gladly sat with Swamiji and massaged his legs. However Swamiji was not happy, He told the disciple that young people like him did not know how to do even such things properly. He further demanded, "Call Raja Maharaj, He knows how to massage properly". The disciple was shocked. Raja Maharaj was Swami Brahmanandaji , the president of the Ashram. How could he go and tell the president that Swamiji had asked him to massage his legs. However the Guru's words have to be obeyed. So with great fear, he went and reported the whole thing to the president. Swami Brahmanandaji immediately came to Swamiji's room and dutifully massaged Swamiji for an hour. Afterwards the disciple asked Swami Brahmananda, "Sir you are the president and Swamiji himself has praised you in many ways, Why did you do this chore?". Swami Brahmanandaji replied, "You fool, dont you know that it is Lord Shiva Himself who is lying up there !". - Complete works of Swami Vivekananda On another occassion in the Belur math, the great devotee of Sri Ramakrishna , Nag Mahashaaya had come. Swamiji was very happy and told his devotees who he used to teach that today was a holiday and there would be no class, since a great devotee of the master had arrived. The moment Nag Mahashaaya saw Swamiji , with great reverence and with folded hands , he exclaimed, "Today I am blessed, My third eye has opened , I have had the darshan of Shiva, I have had the darshan of Shiva". - They Lived with God by Swami Chetanananda. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A FREE web-based e-mail service brought to you by the PC World Technology Network. Guest guest
Hari Om Anandji: Thanks for postings episodes from Swami Vivekananda's life. In the development of Vedic culture and traditions, stories depicting 'Role Models' had an integral part. Your contribution follows this tradition and consequently quite important. regards, Ram Chandran Note: The purpose of the list moderators is to propogate spirituality and none of us have any intention to regulate spiritual expressions.
