I came across an article on Sanskara long time back. The article in it's

full length is quite volumonous but i will try to translate the basic

things about Sankaras.

The biggest boon which Lord has given to Human Being is that of Life.

Prakriti through it's subtle and special act initiates the creation of

life and to be born this child grows up in mothers womb. This journey

starts right from that time. none of the acts of Lord are without an aim

and he in his own image creates the form of Purusha (Man) and Prakriti (

Nature ) or in other words in the form of Nar ( Man ) and a Naarri ( Woman

). Life is created through Mother Father under the grace of Divine and

from this very day the responsibilities of a Mother and Father start.

In vedaas lot of importance has been given to the building of a life,

in which the journey of this life right from Garbaadhaan ( when the

baby starts concieving ) in mother's womb to death is given in detail. .

The word "Sanskara" means "The form caused due to touch" or in other words

developing the seed to complete satisfaction and happiness by "Touch" (

Samparsh) is what is called "Sanskara". "Sanskara" means "the pure form"

( Shuddh Aakaar ) which means that in whole life the situation of

uniousness may not come and one lives the whole life with High ideals,

supreme knowledge. The word "Sanskriti" has come up from the word

"Sanskar". At different places one can find people with different

"Sanskaras" and it's due to these sanskara's that we have different

sanskritis. Our Sanskriti is called "Arya Sanskriti" and in this "Vedokta

Sanskriti" ( Culture as said in vedas ) lies the procedure for converting

a man in to Purushotam ( The perfect man ).

Sanskara is an unending act and we will reap wat we sow.

"Jo boyei peda babul ka, aam kahan se hoy"

In other words it's foolish to think that we can get Mangoes from the

Babool tree which we have planted.

Life has been divided in to five parts and these are :-

Baalyavasthaa , Kishoravasthaa, Yuvaavashaa, Prodhaavasthaa and

Vridhaavasthaa.

In Vedic Sanskriti for the proper building of the life of an individual

a well thought over direction to life is shown and for it proposes the 16

sanskaras.

Every country or religion has sanskaras in one form or the other, but in

Vedas and shaastraas the great importance of sanskaras has been

displayed. In vedas it is said that

"Janmnaam jaayatei shudraah sanskaaraad divij uchayatei |"

Even after being born to dvij family the child can still remain Shudra or

Asanskaarit. It's only though Sanskaras that he gains the respect of being

called dvij. This Sanskara is possible only due to Guru.

Rishis have felt the necessity of vedic sanskaras in removing the sins

that we get as soon as we are born ( Janamjaat Dosha) and shortcomings

which an individual suffers from. The glorious pillars of Indian History

- Veda Vyasa, Ram, Shree Krishna, Ramanujaacharya and Shankraacharya and

pious like these became a reality only due to this tradition of Sanskaras

which they got from their Gurus.

Importance of Sanskaras

--------------------------

Angiraa has said following about the Sanskaras

Chitram Karmaadyathaanei kayi rangayirunmilyatei shanayih,

Brahahmanyapi tadavtsyat sanskarayi vidhipurvakayih |

which means that a picture is made by filling different colours with help

of a painting brush, in the similar way if the sanskaras have done as

the said rules then this body becomes capable of knowing what Brahma is.

16 Sanskaras

-------------

Mahrishi Gautam has considered 40 and Mahrishi Angiraa has considered them

to be 24 but according to Mahrishi Veda Vyasa the major importance is

given only to 16 sanskaras.
