Guest guest
Advaitin List & Gita satsang Members Namaste I express my sincere appreciation to Shri Ramchandran & the Moderators for bringing out different commentaries particularly on verses from 47 to 53 of Chapter II, considered the heart of Gita by many I know. The sloka beginning with " Karmanye ..." was made famous, atleast in Tamilnadu by Sivaji Ganesan in Film Karna, much before I read Gita. Gita is considered an important religious text by most of the Hindu elite although it is difficult to read and comprehend without Guidance, atleast it was so in my case. When I read it first as a school student in the sixties- a Tamil Translation by Vinobha Bhabe- I was in fact intrigued why it was blown up so much. There was no quick fix in it. Perhaps the best age to read verses 47 to 53 is when one is in that age group (47-53) as I am now. The meaning is more clear now although the context and style is still a bit of mystery to me as to why such an imporatnt message was delivered in a battle field when presumably when everyone was itching for a fight and hardly in a state of find to receive spiritual advice. Is Lord krishna indirectly saying that " When advice is most needed it is least heeded" as the proverb goes? While one cannot dispute the fundamental logic of all these divine advice, it is still a bit of a problem to apply it in day to day modern life where the demands of the situation are different from the scenario thousands of years ago. Hinduism is creative religion and we may be blessed with Gita version II in a new Avtar of Vishnu. But till that time, we must follow the current edition and interpret it with the help of Acharyas who have laboured to produce commentaries for our better comprehension. In particualr I take this occassion to express my sincere personal Thanks and appreciation to Chinmayananda for I feel he did indeed a very good job of making Gita more relavant in modern day context. His work & example is so inspiring that I hope one day I too can do some similar work. Hari OM.
