There is no substance which is different or nondifferent from you. Why then, O shameless mind, are you grieving? I am Existence-Knowledge-Bliss and boundless as space. Commentary:- Mind is the shameless one not the Self! Strong stuff! Then where does shame arise from? If there is an experience of shame, it is within the mind that it is experienced. Here is the same verse in Sw. Ashokananada's translation: Thou has no name and form even to the extent of allusion, nor any substance differentiated or undifferentiated. Why dost thou grieve, O thou of shameless mind? I am the nectar of Knowledge, homogeneous Existence, like the sky! The "thou" referred to is the disciple of Dattatreya. In this context the "shameless mind" is recognition given to the disciple for his deep inquiry and discipline. > Strong stuff! > Useful ideas about the 'Self' in Advaita Vedanta for A level students Ideas about the Self are the whole problem. Hook, line, and sinker. --jody.
