"Hari Om Shri Gurubhyo Namah" - (Salutations to all Spiritual Teachers...)

Namaste friends,

This Sunday 16th will mark the auspicious day of "Guru Purnima".

Hindu Scripture states:

"Na guror adhikam tattvam, na guror adhikam tapah;

Tattva-jnaanaat param naasti, tasma Shree Gurave namah."

"Salutations to that Teacher! There is no principle higher than the

Teacher; there is no greater austerity than service to the Teacher; greater

than true wisdom, there exists not anything..."

We owe our lives to all those that have been our Guru; right from our

parents and elders, to our secular teachers, and above all, our true

spiritual teachers... I hope we all have a chance to spend a brief moment

and pay homage to all Gurus on the day of Guru Purnima.

Below are two quotations: one of what H.H. Swami Vivekananda has said on

this topic, and one of H.H. Swami Chinmayananda's message for the new

generation.

Hari OM

milen....

----------

The preaching of sermons by brooks and stones may be true as a poetical

figure, but no one can preach a single grain of truth until he has it in

himself... This eye-opener of religion is the spiritual teacher... There is

nothing higher and holier than the knowledge which comes to the soul

transmitted by a spiritual teacher. Serve all such teachers like a child,

open your heart to their influence, and see in them God manifested...

When the teacher is the spiritual ancestor and the disciple is the

spiritual descendant, then there alone to gigantic spiritual souls grow...

Such teachers are few in number, no doubt, in this world, but the world is

never altogether without them. They are the fair flowers of human life, and

keep the world going; it is the strength that is manifested from these

hearts of life that keeps the bonds of society intact...

- Swami Vivekananda

(excerpts of Complete Works....)

--------------

"India has always been the guru of the world. This generation has been

called upon to lead and guide the world. The time has come, not in killing,

not in destroying, not in warfare, but in learning and understanding how to

face the problems of the outer world. It is absolutely necessary to study

the scriptures and learn to practice the teachings in our everyday lives..."

The Poornima (Full Moon) Day in the month of Ashadha

(July-August) is known as "Guru Poornima". This is a

very sacred day on which special worship is performed

to the Acharyas, who, through their Infinite

Compassion and Supreme Grace, have imparted the

Knowledge of the Absolute (Brahma Vidya) through a

long and continuous line of Acharyas (Guru Parampara)

to all the Seekers of the Self. Among the Acharyas,

Sri Veda Vyasa stands the foremost and on this day,

special pujas are offered to Vyasa Maharishi.

Vyasa is the great grand son of Vasishta, grand son of

Shakti, son of Parasara and the father of Suka. He

is considered the personification of Maha Vishnu

Himself and the abode of all Knowledge. He is also

known as Badarayana because he practiced austerities

under a Badari tree; as Krishna Dwaipayana because He

was black in complexion and was born in an island. He

is hailed as Brahma without four heads, as Hari with

two hands and Shiva without the third eye!

Veda Vyasa compiled the Vedas into four divisions (

1131 Sakhas or Recensions divided into Rig (21

sakhas), Yajur (101 sakhas), Sama (1000 sakhas) and

Atharvana Veda (9 sakhas)). Vyasaji others works

include:

(1) Brahma Sutras (555 Sutras or Aphorisms

integrating the messages of the Upanishads relating to

Jiva, the Universe and Brahman);

(2) Eighteen Maha Puranas (Brahma Purana, Padma

Purana, Bhagavata Purana, Siva Purana, Skanda Purana,

Garuda Purana, Brahmanda Purana etc. Actually,

Vishnu Purana was written by Vysacharya's father,

Parasaracharya, but was edited and presented by

Vyasa..

(3) He narrated the incidents of the Mahabharata to

Maha Ganapati who wrote the Mahabharata. Veda Vyasa

injected the essence of all Vedas through Bhagavad

Gita to establish and preserve human Dharma.

In Gita jnAna Sloka, Sage Vyasa is praised as

follows:

Namostu te VyAsa vishAlabuddhe

phullAravindAyatapatranetra;

Yena tvayA BhAratatailapoornah prajvAlito gnAnamayah

pradeepah.

"Salutations to thee, O Vyasa, of profound intellect

and with eyes like the petals of a full-blown lotus,

by whom the lamp of Knowledge with the oil of the

Mahabharata, has been lit!"

Traditionally, the Chaturmasya Vratam starts on Guru

Poornima day. The term Chaturmasya means a period of

four months (which also coincides with the rainy

season); however, here a fortnight (Paksha ) is taken

as one month and so the Chaturmasya Vrata is observed

for two calendar months. During this time Sanyasins

stay in one place to meditate on the Absolute.

Puja" : K.K. Sankaran, in Tributes to Guru, Sri

Sringeri Math , 1992.
