A doctor of the soul and mind

CHENNAI, SEPT. 8. Since the beginning of creation, some

miraculous and mysterious power has been at work in every age and

it will continue to do so. One may call it by any name but He is

God, who is self-luminous, independent, unchanging, beyond the

reach of speech and mind. He may not be seen by all in flesh and

blood but His presence can be experienced through meditation,

with one-pointed mind.

This universe reflects His all-supporting nature. Water proclaims

the message of His sanctity, fire indicates His purity, air

signifies His omnipotence and ether heralds His all-pervading

nature. Divine wisdom, power, dispassion, strength, wealth and

fame are His attributes and hence He is called ``Bhagawan''. At

His command, the Sun rises and sets exactly at the stipulated

time. Stars, planets and satellites revolve in the sky in fixed

orbits in accordance with immutable laws and this is due to that

intelligent Creator. The entire world functions harmoniously only

because of this supreme power. God directs the mind, determines

the span of life and distributes to everyone the fruits of

action.

As the absentee landlord of the world, God hides Himself within

all objects. Scriptures say that ``One Shining Being sits in

every creature, pervading everything, the inner Self of all,

observer of every act, abiding in everyone, as a witness.'' He is

described as the ocean of mercy and He becomes a slave of His

devotees. ``I am not in My control. I obey those who repose faith

in Me. They have taken entire possession of My heart. How can I

leave them when they have renounced everything for My sake

only'', asks Lord Krishna. Devotion is the slender thread of Love

that binds the heart of a devotee to God. It is a spontaneous

attachment to Him.

The above sentiments expressed by Swami Sivananda were recalled

today, on his birth anniversary (September 8, 1887) by Swami

Vimalananda in a lecture. Swami Sivananda's passion for service

drew him to the medical career, but after his stay in this

profession he turned a ``doctor of the soul and the mind.'' In

1932 he started the Sivananda Ashramam at Rishikesh (the

Himalayas), the Divine Life Society after four years and

established an institute to train aspirants in Yoga and Vedanta

later. He had written over 250 books and attained ``Maha Samadhi

in 1963''. Referring to his formula to reach the goal of life,

Swami Vimalananda said the three essentials are: constant

remembrance of God, cultivation of virtues and spiritualisation

of all activities. ``Whatever you do, eat, give or practise

austerity, do it as an offering to the Lord and always feel that

you are an instrument in His hands and His decision shall

prevail''.

One question:

I think she is trying to say the verse "eko bhUtah sarva bhUteshu gUdaha,

sarva vyApi, sarva bhUtAntaratma, karmAdhyakshaha, sarva bhUthadhivAsaha,

sAkSi ..."

Does karmAdhyaksha mean observer of every act ? [every other word matches

quite well...]

Regards.

Beautiful and description of the Lord.

Just want to add a note about Swamini Vimalanada - She graduated from

Sandeepany Sadhanaalaya of Chinmaya Mission and very actively involved in

the Coimbattor area as the Swamini in charge of the Chinmaya Mission. She

is well known in terms of her clarity of presentation both from devotional

point and from analytical point. Although she is centered in Coimbattor,

she travels mostly in the south giving discourses on Geeta and Upanishads; a

tradition of Chinmaya Mission where evening classes are devoted to Geeta and

morning classes for Upanishads.

I think you have zeroed in on the sloka. With His presence as an

enlivening factor nothing works anyway.

There is somewhat similar sloka in the 13th Ch. - as the upadrashaTa - just

as witness of the whole drama of life!
