Guest guest
I have been reading the posts on the subject with interest though not, I confess, with any great thoroughness since I don't believe one can make the choice in the first place (but let's not get onto THAT subject again!). It just occurred to me whilst reading one of the more recent posts that I heard something relevant in one of Swami Parthasarathy's Giitaa lectures. He argues that one cannot *give up* anything. What happens is that one *takes up* something 'higher' and then the lower falls away. Thus the child, playing with his toys and not wanting to let anyone near them will, at some point, become interested in something 'higher' such as a bicycle. When this happens, he has no further interest in the toys and spends all his time with the cycle. Then he meets a girl and everything else goes out of the window! As far as this discussion is concerned, surely what happens is that one becomes interested in the pursuit of truth and the lower values (attachments) become less and less important. (I'm all in favour of keeping things very simple!) Dennis
