Swami Chinmayanandaji was initiated by Swami Shivananda. As the story goes

Chinmayanandaji being a journalist went to Rushikesh to write an article on

how the swami-s are cheating the pubic. Swami Shivananda asked him to stay

for six months and observe the life there. In six months, Swami

Chinmayananda got convinced of the ascetic life and decided to take

sanyaasa. As he was more interested to learn Vedanta Swami Shivananda sent

him to Tapovan Maharaj where he stayed with Tapovanji for the next seven

years. Tapovan Maharaj agreed to take him as his student on one condition -

he will teach only once that too in Hindi (both being from Kerala) and if

the student is slaking in any thing he will kick him out. After learning at

the feet of the master for seven years and inspired by the knowledge, Swami

Chinmayanandaji wanted to come down to plains to propagate the knowledge.

Tapovan Maharaj first discouraged the idea but later agreed and blessed his

student and kept himself informed of his progress. When Swami

Chinmayanandaji first started teaching Geeta and Upanishads in Pune, First

day there were only five people, and the days that followed the number

increased in geometric proportion to the degrees they have to change the

Venue. Thus Geeta JNaana yagna-s started along with the protests from

Orthodox community for mass propagation of the sacred scriptures in English

to the public. After a 50 plus days of Bhagavad Geeta Yagna in Madras in

1952, the core attendees of the yagna decided to continue the studies after

the yagna and formed "Chinmaya Mission". First Swamiji protested but later

got convinced the need of an organization and that is the birth of Chinmaya

Mission. It is the light of the ancients, nurtured by Tapovan Maharaj

passed on to his Student Swami Chinmayanandaji that spread all over India

because of the intense longing of the propagation of the Vedantic teaching

to all earnest seekers. First Sandeepany Sadhanalaya was started to train

teachers of Vedanta. Swami Dayananda, who has later established Arshya

Vidya PiiTam was the achaarya of the Sandeepany. The current head of the

mission, Swami Tejomayanandaji was a student of Dayananda. Many of the

students have established their own missions and are spreading the glory of

the Vedanta following a Shankara Sampradaaya. Tapovan Maharaj’s intensive

training of one student spread the flame of knowledge all over the five

continents. Bharat and particularly Kerala is indeed blessed with sons

like Shankara, Tapovan Maharaj and Swami Chinmayananda.

Swami Chinmayanandaji used to tell us so many anecdotes about Tapovan

Maharaj. He is the very incarnation of Tapas. One by name of Shastri from

Behar has write slokas called “Tapovana Shatakam” praising the glory of

Tapovanji Maharaj. This is chanted with full devotion in all Chinmaya

Mission centers throughout the world.
