The sleep that flits on baby's eyes -

Does anybody know from where it comes ?

Yes, there is a rumour that it has its dwelling where, in the fairy

village among shadows of the forest dimly lit with glow-worms, there

hang two timid buds of enchantment.

>From there it comes to kiss baby's eyes.

The smile that flickes on baby's lips when he sleeps- does anybody

know where it was born ? Yes,...

The sweet, soft freshness that blooms on baby's limbs - does anybody

know where it was hidden so long ? Yes,...

- From Tagore's Gitanjali #61

Yagnavalkya tells Mytreyi:'Thou who art truly dear to me, thou hast

increased what is dear( to me in thee). Therefore, if you like, Lady,

I will explain it to thee, and mark well what I say.'

'Verily, a husband is not dear, that you may love the husband; but

that you may love the Self, therefore a husband is dear.'

'Verily, a wife is not dear, that you may love the wife; but that you

may love the Self, therefore a wife is dear.'

....

'Verily, everything is not dear, that you may love everuthing; but

that you may love the Self, therefore everything is dear.'

'Verily, the Self is to be seen, to be heard, to be perceived, to be

marked, O Maitreyi! When we see, hear, perceive, and know the Self,

then all this is known.'
