Lives and Teachings of Saints

Dear members,

During the course of my discussions of spiritual matters with people, I had

noticed a few things (I may have been wrong). Many from North India have

not either heard (at all) or know very little of Ramana Maharshi. People

from South India again, do not know anything about the teachings of Saint

Kabir and the like. They both were advaitins of a very high order. They

can be classified under "neo-advaitins". For the benefit of both the

audience I am starting 2 postings:

1. Teachings of Kabir

2. Life of Ramana Maharshi

Every weekend I will post translation of one poem by Saint Kabir and dwell a

little on the life of Ramana Maharshi. For those who know both well, kindly

pardon. I hope I am not violating any of the list policies by discussing

personalities not approved by the list. Please stop me, if they are not in

line with your policies.

Again, I am new to this list and hence if all these have been gone through

many times, I can skip it in that case too.

Regards.

S. V. Subrahmanian.

Harih Aum Subramanianji:

Namaskar,

Thanks for starting a new thread of discussions on the Lives and Teachings of

Saints. All opportunities to clear our ignorance are always welcome. You will

have plenty of audiences to read your Discussions and articles on Saints such

as Ramana Maharishi and Saint Kabir.

We encourage you to continue your postings without any reservation,

warmest regards,

Namaste.

I will also help Sri Subramanianji by contributing on teachings of

Sri Ramana Maharshi, one per week. However, if what I quote hereby

may actually end up confusing the audience, I will stop it.

Sri Ramana Maharshi: Time and space cannot effect the Self. They are

in you. So also all that you see around you is in you. There is a

story to illustrate this point.

"A lady had a precious necklace round her neck. Once in her

excitement she forgot it and thought that the necklace was lost. She

became anxious and looked for it in her home but could not find it.

She asked her friends and neighbours if they knew anything about the

necklace. They did not. At last a kind friend of hers told her to

feel the necklace round her neck. She found that it had all along

been round her neck and she was happy. When others asked her later if

she had found the necklace which was lost, she said, 'Yes, I have

found it.' She still felt that she had recovered a lost jewel."

Now, did she lose it at all? It was all along round her neck. But

judge her feelings. She was as happy as if she had recovered a lost

jewel. Similarly with us, we imagine that we will realise that Self

some time, whereas we are never anything but the Self.
