Namaste,

Today is "skanda-shhashhThii", 6th day of the waxing moon-phase

in the month of maargashiirshha.

Parama-Pujya Sw. Chandrashekharendra Sarasvati [1895-1994]

quotes from Valmiki's Ramayana, Kausalya's advice to Rama as he was

about leave for the 14 years of exile: [Hindu Dharma:1st ed., 1995,

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan; Ch 1, 'Dharma Alone Protects', p.4]:

yaM paalayasi dharma.n tvam dhR^ityaa cha niyamena cha .

sa vai raaghava-shaarduula dharmaH tvaam abhirakshatu ..

"Raghava, it is dharma alone that will protect you, and this dharma

is what you yourself protect with courage and steadfastness."

The Monier-Williams Dictionary gives these meanings:

Namaste,

For those who would like to know more about Skanda [Kartikeya]:

Gurudev Sri Swami Sivanandaji's book "Lord Shanmukha and His

Worship".

Gurudev graphically portrays in this book the advent of Lord

Shanmukha or Karthikeya, the purpose of His incarnation and its

significance, highlighting the various aspects of the Six-faced Lord,

with their esoteric significance and spiritual import. This book can

be downloaded from:

Is this really the month of Margashirsha ? The Makara Darshanam festival at

Sabarimala concludes at the end of Margashirsha Masa. So I was under the

impression that Margashirsha starts around Dec 14th.

Namaste,

I guess I should have mentioned the calendar source! It is on

Kalanirnay calendar. Regional calendars in India often vary, and 3

sites I visited gave 3 different dates! So I guess the regional

traditions prevail for different festivals.

Datta Jayanti is on Margashirsha full Moon day [Dec. 11] and the

New Moon Day is on Dec. 25, so this is Margashirsha according to

Kalnirnay!
