Namaste,

 

This is a glossary for words [suggested by Dennis]. I shall add

these to the master file if no corrections are recommended.

 

aatma- = pertaining to self

 

aatmaj~naanam = knowledge of the Self

 

aatmajij~naasaa = desire for inquiry into knowledge of Self

 

aatman = the essence of Reality in an individual

 

aatmanaH = of one's own

 

adhikaari = competent, qualified

 

adhishhThaanam = locus

 

adhyaasa-bhaashyam = critical commentary on the phenomenon of

superimposition

 

adhyastaH = superimposed upon

 

adhyastatvaat = by reason of superimposition

 

aham = I

 

aikyam = unity

 

aparaa = peratining to the material universe

 

aparoksha = immediate, without any intermediary means of knowledge

 

athaataH = now therefore [atha+ataH]

 

avagati = conception, anticipation

 

bhaashhyam = commentary

 

bR^ihadaaraNyaka = the longest of the principal [10] upanishads

 

braahmaNa = the social group enjoined with the duty of scriptural

interpretation

 

brahma-aatma = universal and individual Reality

 

brahma-akshara-samudbhavam = arising from the imperishable Reality

 

brahma-jij~naasaa = the desire for inquiry into the Ultimate Reality

 

brahmatvam = the essence of Being

 

brahmavid = knower of the Ultimate Truth

 

brahma-vidyaam = pertaining to knowledge of Ultimate Reality

 

chautashhTayam = the group of four entities

 

dR^iDha = firm

 

hiranyagarbha = "goden embryo', the first manifestation of the

Formless Reality

 

ichchhaa = wish

 

j~naanaaya = for the sake of knowledge

 

jagat = the universe

 

kaaraNam = the instrument; a cause

 

kartavyaH = a necessary action

 

kaThopanishad = one of the [10] principal upanishads

 

kshatra.n = the warrior group

 

lakshyaartha = the implied meaning

 

maha = great

 

mahaavaakya = the great statements

 

manthavyo = ought to be contemplated upon

 

mumukshaa = desire for liberation [from rebirth]

 

nididhyaasitavyaH = ought to be constantly meditated on

 

nivartyaH = that ought to be removed

 

odanaH = food, porridge

 

paraprakR^iti = the spiritual nature

 

paryantam = upto the limit of

 

pipaThishaa =

 

prakR^iti = the insentient part of nature

 

pratishhThaam = embedded in

 

pratyayaH = suffix

 

puurvapakshi = objector

 

rajjutvam = the nature of being a rope

 

ruupasya = of the form

 

sa.nsaaraH = the cycles of births and deaths

 

sarpatvam = the nature of being a serpent

 

sarpavat = like a serpent

 

sarva-vidyaa = all forms of knowledge

 

satyam = truth

 

shaashtra = scriptures [as guides to action]

 

shabdena = by words or speech

 

shhashhThii = sixth

 

shrotavyo = ought to be listened to carefully

 

siddha = perfect

 

swa = one's own

 

taittiriiya = one of the [10] principal upanishads

 

tatpurushha = a grammatical term to describe a claa of compound words

 

ubhe = both

 

udbhavam = born, originating

 

upanishad = the last parts of the vedas

 

vaachyaartha = the literal meaning

 

vedanta = the end of the vedas, a philosophy describing nature of

ultimate reality

 

vicharaH = disrimination

 

viddhi = [you] understand

 

vijij~naasasva = inquire deeply

 

yasya = whose

There is always reduplication involved in this kind of a

constructions, with the first syllable using an i/I sound,

when the verbal root has a or i sounds in it. e.g.

 

jijnAsA - from root jnA, to know,

pipAsA - from root pI, to drink,

mImAmsA - from root mi, to measure,

ninISA - from root nI, to bring/carry,

vivakSA - from root vac, to speak.

 

When the root verb has the u sound, the reduplicated sound

uses u in the first syllable, e.g.

 

bubhukshA - from root bhuj, to eat,

mumukshA - from root muc, to liberate.

 

Since all these constructions are of the form "desire to ..."

it is called the desi-derative form of the verb.

 

When the ending vowel is changed to u, the resulting word

denotes "one who desires to ..." Thus, jijnAsu, mumukshu etc.

Let me add my thnanks to Sadaji's too.

 

There is one correction that may be in order:

 

miimaa.nsaa is a desiderative of root verb 'man', [=to reflect on].

 

mi = to measure. Desid. =mitsati; Intensive =memiiyate

 

mii = to transgress; go astray; Desid. and Inten. same as above.

Oh yes, that makes immediate sense. Thanks for the correction. I

had surely learnt the derivation from root man, but see how

forgetfulness leads to avidyA!!

In fact forgetfullness is also MYSELF!!

 

'sarvasya cha aha.n hR^idi sa.nnivishhtaH

 

mattaH smR^itiH j~naanam apohana.n cha . ....'

 

So you can't escape IT whether you remember or forget!!
