Pranams.

 

Whatever I could cull out the meanings of the names of Lord Krishna and

Bhakta Arjuna, I am giving them hereunder.

 

KRISHNA

 

The names of Lord Sri Krishna used in Bhagavad Gita are Achyutha,

Anantha, Aprathiprabhava, Arisudana, Adya, Bhagavan, Janardana, Deva,

Devadeva,

Devavara, Devesa, Parameswara, Purushottama, Prabhu, Bhagavantha,

Kamalapatraksha, Krishna, Kesava, Bhuthabhavana, Bhuthesa, Madhusudana,

Mahathma, Mahabahu. Madhava, Yadava, Yogi, Yogeswara, Ksanishoodana,

Govinda, Jagatpathi, Jagannivasa, Varshneya, Vasudeva, Viswamurthi,

Visweswara, Vishnu, Sarva, Sahasrabahu, Hrishikesa.

 

1. Achyutha means He who does not deviate from His divine glory or nature.

2. Anantha means He who does not have any limit, beyond one's imagination.

3. Arisuda means He who destroys the enemies.

4. Janardana means He who is worshipped by people for prosperity and

emancipation or He who is adored by devotees for fulfilment of their

desires.

5. Bhagavan means He who is endowed with power, virtue, fame, glory,

detachment and freedom.

6. Govinda means Go means the living being and Vinda means the knower

thereof. The knower of the destiny of beings or the knowner of the Jivatman.

7. Hrishikesa means the Lord of the mind and the senses.

8. Jagannivasa means the abode of the universe.

9. Kesava has three meanings. 1. Destroyer of the demon Kesin. 2. He who has

beautiful hair on the head. 3. K means Brahma, the Creator, A means Vishnu

and Isa means Rudra. He who is embodiment of the Vedic Trinity.

10. Krishna also has three meanings 1. He who is dark in colour indicataing

His infinitude. 2. Krish means existence and na means bliss. He who is

existence, knowledge and bliss inKrishna. 3. He who saves devotees from

distress. It means He is the remover of sin and He who is Brahman.

11. Madhava is one of the thousand names attributed to Vishnu, the

preserving phase of Brahman. Ma is Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and

prosperity and Dhava is the groom or the owner thereof. The Lord of Lakshmi.

12. Madhusudana means He who destroyed the demon named Madhu.

13. Purushottama means the Supreme Person.

14. Varshneya means He who belongs to the Vrshni clan.

15. Vasudeva means the son of Vasudeva. The Immanent in all.

16. Vishnu means the all pervading One.

17. Yadava means He who comes from the Yadava clan.

18. Yogeswara means the Lord of Yoga.

 

The meanings of other names like Bhuthesa, Mahabahu, Mahathma, Jagatpathi,

Viswamurthi, Visweswara, Sarva, Sahasrabahu, Parameswara, Devesa, Devadeva,

etc. are clear and I think no need to give meanings for them.

 

 

ARJUNA

 

The names of Arjuna, as used in Bhagavad Gita, are Anagha, Anusooya,

Arjuna, Kapidhwaja, Kiriti, Kurupraveera, Kurunanda, Kurushresta,

Kurusattama, Kauntheya, Gudakesha, Tata, Dehabhruthamvara, Dhanamjaya,

Paranthava, Pandava, Partha, Purusharshabha, Bharatharshabha,

Bharatashresta, Bharatasattama, Bharata, Mahabaahu and Savyasaachi.

 

 

1. Arjuna means the pure in nature.

2.3.4. Bharatarshabha, Bharatasattama and Bharatasreshta means the best of

Bharatas.

5. Dhananjaya means the conqueror of wealth.

6. Gudakesa means the conqueror of sleep or the one who has control over

sleep.

7.Kapidhwaja means He whose ensign is a monkey.

8. Kaunteya means the son of Kunti.

9. Kiriti means He who has a diadem.

10. Kurunandana means the joy of the Kurus.

11. Kurushreshta means the best of the Kurus.

12. Mahabahu means the mighty armed.

13. Pandava means the won of Pandu.

14. Partha means the son of Pritha, Kunti.

15. Parantapa means the scorcher of foes.

16. Purushavyaghra means the tiger of men.

17. Savyasachi means He who could shoot arrows with the lift hand also.

18. Anagha means the sinless.

 

There are a few more names, whose meaning need to be explained. As and when

I get them by HIS blessings, I will do so.

Bhagavan: In Sri Adi Sankara's commetary to Srimad Bhagavad Gita,

Chapter III's last Bhagavan has got many interpretations. Apart from the

regular ones Sri Sankara says that Bhagavan is one who has the complete

knowledge of knowledge and complete knowledge of ignorance.

We find two definitions in scriptures regarding the word Bhagawan:

 

1.

utpattiMca vinASaMca bhootAnAM AgatAgatiH

vEtti vidyAM avidyAMca sa vAcyO bhavAniti ||

 

 

2.

aiSvaryaMca samagrascya veeryasca yaSasaH SriyaH

jnAna varirAgyayOscaiva shaNNAM bhaga iteeraNA ||
