Requirements for success in life

CHENNAI, FEB. 5. The success of any endeavour, either in the

spiritual or material field, depends on several factors. A man

may draw up plans but while executing them, he may falter or

there may be obstacles from unexpected quarters. But there are

very important issues among all other considerations, which need

to be given top priority so as to ensure that the scheme embarked

upon never fails. Firstly, there should be a positive approach

and a person's intention known in starting a venture, which

should be for constructive purposes and not to cause damage or

harm to others. His thinking should be clear and he should throw

his full weight in the task before him. He should work hard and

depend on the Divine grace. Positive thinking, use of intellect,

serious efforts and the goal to be attained should be clear

before a person. These essential requirements are usually

compared to the stages in plant life - the bud, flower, raw fruit

and ripened fruit.

Saint Thiruvalluvar who has left a treasure house of morals, in

his ``Thirukkural'', covering all aspects of human activities,

has spelt out his views on how to achieve success. Even as the

Vedic saying goes, a person's attitude can be judged from the way

he tries to get a job fulfilled. His thinking should be clear and

he should become deeply involved in giving shape to his thoughts.

Firm of purpose, he should carry out his resolution, says the

saint, adding that no task will be difficult to the diligent. A

steady mind with total dependence on God will clear obstacles

even as one of the Saivite apostles, Pusalar Nayanar, ``built'' a

temple in his heart and ``consecrated'' the idol therein (in his

imagination) while the Pallava king, who had actually constructed

a temple, had to wait for an auspicious time.

In his lecture, Sri M. K. Ramanan said the hard labour a person

puts in and his perseverance will fetch him success. Industry

will always promote prosperity while indolence will result in

poverty and misery. Strenuous strivers toiling hard will leave

behind even fate and go forward towards their goal of success.

The life of Dandi Nayanar, a blind messenger of God, shows how he

was committed to his resolve to do service to God by desilting

the tank in Thiruvarur, by holding the rope which he tied

connecting two ends. The task undertaken should confine to Law of

Virtue, be beneficial to others and if the very purpose behind is

nefarious he will be punished. Ravana acquired spiritual powers

by his austerities and penance but met with disaster as he

yielded to lust. Lastly for success or failure in a scheme, a

person should maintain his equanimity leaving the results to God.
