EARTH QUAKE RELIEF APPEAL

Republic day celebrations were in full swing when the

tragedy of the major earthquake struck Gujarat. This

earthquake was the worst India had seen in over One hundred

and fifty years. The full-scale devastation caused in areas

such as Bhuj and Bacchao required fast and efficient aid.

This galvanised Dr Anil Suchak (Medical Director of Suchak

Hospital, Malad), to organise an emergency relief team in

collaboration with the MMA (Malad Medical Association).

Prior to this Dr Suchak held a meeting with the organisers

of Sarvodaya Bidada Hospital (Mr Lax Jain). A relief team

was formed within four hours and sent by flight on the

first day. Eleven doctors went by air and started attending

to casualties in the Sarvodaya Hospital, Bidada Trust.

A Second team headed by Dr Anil Suchak was organised. (The

list of doctors and volunteers is mentioned below). This

team of twenty-six departed immediately and reached the

very next day. Three cars and three ambulances were used

for transportation and supplies. The Trust has set up

special facilities including tents where the doctors could

assess and attend to the patients accordingly. Four

operation theatres were made available in which over two

hundred operations were carried out in the short span of

two days. These included about 200 major surgeries with a

large number of compound fractures and amputations and 250

minor surgeries.

Many patients poured into the Bidada centre from all over

Kutch as it had the necessary infrastructure to attend to

those affected. Some of those who required extensive

surgery were airlifted to Mumbai and relocated at Suchak

Hospital where provisions were immediately arranged to

accommodate at least twenty-five patients by the back-up

team headed by Mrs. Abha Suchak, Dr. Umesh Khanna and

Doctors of Malad Medical Association. These patients were

however malnourished and suffering from severe anaemia.

They were therefore given I.V. fluids and blood

transfusions to build them up for surgery. Surgeries have

already commenced and will continue in the course of the

next few days.

The second batch meanwhile is ready to leave shortly,

comprising of both surgeons and physicians to handle not

only the surgical and trauma cases, but also to handle the

anticipated outbreak of Gastroenteritis, Cholera, Jaundice,

Typhoid etc.

This has been our immediate small response to the

devastating Earthquake. However, a lot needs to be done; on

both immediate and long term basis.

Immediate measures:

Sending our Doctors, Paramedics and Volunteers to work in

Sarvodaya Bidada Trust Hospital in Bidada (Kutch), which is

the only existing big hospital equipped to handle the

serious victims. At present the hospital is managing about

1000 OPD patients everyday and 350 indoor patients.

Looking after the non-medical needs; such as food, water,

temporary shelter, clothes, sanitation (toilets), light

(Lanterns and torches), foot wear, blankets etc.

Intermediate Plan:

To set up Rehabilitation Centres with Psychiatric,

Psychosocial and Spiritual care.

Long term plan:

1.Includes adoption (complete or partial) of a village or

Taluka.

2.Providing structure and facility for Education.

3.Health Services.

4.Permanent shelter.

5.Complete Rehabilitation by teaching work oriented

activities.

6.Providing artificial limbs, Jaipur foot, crutches,

walkers etc.

7.Homes for the lone survivors on self-sufficient basis like

sewing, embroidery, papad making etc.

8.Adoption of children (complete/partial - education, food,

clothing up to 18 years of age).

All this would need a lot of support from all of us. The

magnitude of this calamity can only be reduced by our

active and joint participation, for which, we at Suchak

Hospital, have set up a Coordination Cell and a Relief

Centre at the premises.
