Peace can be found through meditation

CHENNAI, FEB. 21. If we scan the pages of history, we will find

that saints and torchbearers of every religion have brought to

the world a simple message: ``Peace lies within''. The process of

achieving this ``inner peace'' is known as meditation, through

which we can discover the light of the Creator shining within

each of us. Contact with this inner light will bring about a

profound transformation and we will be ``bathed'' in love. We

will start treating all humanity as members of one family and

begin to respect and serve one another. If we enjoy peace and

happiness through meditation, we will live maintaining equipoise

and anyone who comes to us will experience peace. Meditation

hence elevates us to achieve an angle of vision in which we will

be witnesses to the unity in the fabric of life and will look

upon the world as an embroidered whole.

Leaders or representatives of a nation, religion, a spiritual

path or an organisation should set an example by meditation,

upholding ethical values and preaching love. No saint had taught

hatred and violence but yet we see religious wars and mutual

destruction. A cause for this strife is that people come to

believe that their own culture and customs are the best and

denigrate those hailing from other religions. It is time to call

a halt to the fires of mutual animosity, and we can do so by

first extinguishing the flames within ourselves.

Sant Rajinder Singh, explaining the message of Sawan Kirpal

Ruhani Mission, of which he is the spiritual head, said in a

lecture, once a person asked a gardener to plant a certain

variety of a tree for which the latter replied that this would

grow slowly and take a century before it reaches maturity, when

the former said ``then we have no time to waste, plant it today

itself.'' Similarly, each one of us should sow the seed of peace

now itself by learning the simple technique of meditation which

is bound to fetch joy within. Once the love of God is awakened,

no one will hurt another.

``How can I alone bring about peace everywhere'', a question was

asked by an individual. A man walking on the beach saw another

picking up a fish and tossing it back into the sea. When asked

why he was engaged in this act, the other replied ``If I fail to

do this, they will die on the shore.'' ``There are so many fish

and what difference can you possibly make?'' He took another fish

and threw it also into the sea saying ``It made a difference from

that one''. We too can bring about a change in humanity and bring

prosperity by the actions we choose to take. ``Life is not a

dagger stained with the blood of hatred but is a branch full of

flowers of love and compassion.''
