Guest guest
Hari OM. I have not read Rig Veda entirely but I have read the (controversial) book by Dr Kochar on Vedic People and its rebuttal in " THE RIGVEDA A Historical Analysis by SHRIKANT G. TALAGERI, Aditya Prakashan, New Delhi. As per both these books, Soma was herbal drink used in Vedic period. Dr Kochar's book gives even the botanical name and one chapter is devoted to it. His basic theory is Rigveda was written by Aryan tribes in present day Afghanistan (where Soma plant is still grown and drunk as per him). It is not intoxicating but a stimulant drink like modern day coffee. It is not pot or drug. It is not grown on plains, but like tea & coffee in a hilly region only. Incredibly he uses this as one of the main arguments to justify his hypothesis that Aryans came down to Gangetic plains after they wrote Ramayana & Mahabaratha and thus by implication, the Puranas are fiction. On otherhand Shri Talageri mentions about Soma being discussed by only one Rishi (and his family) in only one of the earlier Mandalas. As per him this Rishi came down from Afghanistan and hence knew about it. The other Rishis as per him do not give much importance to Soma. He refutes Dr Kochar's hypothesis effeectively as far as I could make out. His thesis is that Hinduism is native to Gangetic plains and not brought from out isde by migrating Aryans. He s such Conquest of Aryans over Dravidians theory to British propaganda to divide Hindu community. Incidentally I read in a newspaper report that Indians are the most geneticaly diversifed people. It has all the possible races in a good ratio. Perhaps a genetic expert like Dr Geetha may comment further.
