Ramakrishna Mission's Narada Bhakti Sutras and Swami Chinmayananda's

discourses on Narada Bhakti Sutra are used.

The books can be purchased from the Missions.

A critical juncture comes at a specific stage of every spiritual

seeker, where (s)he realizes that

- in spite of all the accumulated knowledge and diligent practices

- in spite of living a perfectly ethical and moral life

- in spite of living a life of peace and tranquility

in spite of all, one feels the longing for full expereince of the

Infinite Beatitude.

Therefore, the sootra[1:1] is declared by Shree Narada.

1:1 Now, therefore, we shall expound the doctrine of devotion.

---

For a quick reader: the following may be omitted for now and

revisited later without loss of continuity.

If the seeker on the path of devotion has equipped himself/herself

adequately before taking it, so much greater is the profit.

According to Ramanuja, the teacher of Visishtadvaita, there

are seven qualifications necessary in a seeker who plans to

pursue Devotion. They are:

(1) Discrimination in food (Viveka)

(2) Freedom from desire (Vimukha)

(3) Practice (Abhyas)

(4) Habit of doing good to others (Kriya)

(5) Purity in thought, word and deed, non-violence,

charity, and such other virtues (Kalyan)

(6) Cheerfulness (Anavasada)

(7) Absence of excessive hilariousness (Anuddharasa)

Geeta 12 discusses Bhakti-Yoga.

Actually Bhagavaan Ramanuja refers the above list to Shree Tanka, who is

referred to by Ramanuja as Vakyakaara, who has also written a bhaashya on

Brahmasuutra. Ramanuja has a high regard to Shree Tanka and quates

extensively from Tanka's works in his Shree Bhaashya. I am not sure if

Tanka's orginal work is available.
