Dear Frank and all,

Please allow me to stress that I have not joined this list to discuss, let

alone promote, Advayavada Buddhism, but to learn more about the Advaita

Vedanta of Shankara.

Very kind regards,

John Willemsens.

John,

I hope my original welcome did not come across as an invitation

to argue or promote your particular view! Nor did I mean to put

you on the spot. Apolgogies, if I did! By pointing out those words

from the opening paragraph of your web page, I was simply

hoping that the presence of your differing viewpoint, and

possible critique, would in fact help shed further light on what

Advaita is by the response of those who have considered

anatman, for example, and come to a different conclusion. In

other words, my hope was that as you hear and see what Advaita

is, you would perhaps sometimes critique and question what is

said from your viewpoint, even as I have from my viewpoint as a

Christian interested in learning more about other traditions. This

need not be negative or conflictive. Of course, I would not

presume to say what your role is here, but I do hope that you will,

if you feel so led, ask questions from your standpoint,so that in

the answering of them, I too can learn more about Advaita. One

may learn a great deal from a person declaring what he

believes; but we learn even more about what he believes when

he must defend and explain those views. I hope you will be part

of this, if that is your inclination. And again, welcome, even if we

never here a peep from you! <g>

Best wishes,

steve
