Re : Discussions with Nanda Chandran

Dear Sadananda, we'll first try to resolve the

object/consciousness issue and then move on to

nirvana.

Regarding the non existance of consciousness apart

from the object it perceives :

>It sounds logical.

It is not logical. It is every common man's

experience. Just ask yourself - are you ever in a

state in your normal life where your are only

conscious. We're always conscious of some object or

the other - whether mental or physical - either in the

waking or dream state. Even the so called state

of common self consciousness is only we being aware of

ourselves as an object. Only in the deep sleep state

is there no objects, but again neither is there any

consciousness there!

________

I am not following this thread but perhaps what you mean to say is that you

do not recall being conscious in deep sleep.

It is a matter of practical knowledge that in the Yogic Samadhi (Kevala

Nirvikalpa) one in essence enters deep sleep Fully Conscious. This is my own

experience as well. Usually this is only after long and intense spiritual

practice of many years and with Grace.

Understanding the nature of both sleep and Samadhi is helpful for grasping

the nature of consciousness.

Ramana Maharshi has comprehensively discussed the topics of deep sleep and

Nirvikalpa Samadhi and Sahaj Samadhi. For those actively practicing

meditation, enquiry, and other yogic practices, the perspective of such

great sages as Sri Ramana, which is based on direct experience and first

hand knowledge, is indispensable.

Harsha
