The following text is about sankaracharya's period.

Sankara's Age - 788-829 A.D. or 509 - 477 B.C.- Part -1

 

The Kanchi mutt has a book called 'Punya sloka manjari' in which

the sankaracharya's date is given as 509-477 B.C.

These are the arguments in favour of the above.

 

1) "bale svasmin svayushyamapi CHA-RA-SA-RA-bdhepi kale vililye..

 

The bold letters is in the ka-ta-pa-yadi format. As per this format,

the meaning of the above verse, is 'in the kali year 2625,

shankaracharya left for his immortal abode. Cha- 5; ra- 2; sa-6; ra-

2. As per the rule 'anganam vamato gati:' we get 2625. That shows

that the Acharya attained moksha in the kali year 2625. Kali year

started in 3102 B.C. Hence the kali era 2625 is B.C. 477. Acharyas

life span 32 years as we know. Hence the period is 509 - 477 B.C.

 

The relevant slokas are given below.

 

1- siddhi slokam (from punya sloka manjari referring to the siddhi of

acharya)

 

mahesamsath jathaha madhuram upathishtadvayaha napaha

mahamohadvanthaha prasamana ravi shanmata guru:

bale svasmin svayushyamapi cha-ra-sa-ra-bdhepi kale vililye..

rakthakshinyativrusha sitekadashi pare...

 

2. avatara slokam ( from sushama vyakhyanam refer prachina sankara

vijayam)

 

tishye prayaty-anala-sevadhi-bana-netre

yo nandane dinaman.....

radhe (a)diteruduni nirgate anga lagne

(a)bhyahatamvan sivagurussa sankareti

 

In the second sloka, the words anala-sevadhi-bana-netre is the phrase

indicating

the avatara era.

 

anala means agni which stands for the number 3.

sevadhi means treasure which stands for the number 9.

bana means arrow which stands for the number 5.

netra means eyes which stand for 2.

 

using the above data, we get the avatara era is 2593 kali era. Since

kali started from

3102 B.C , this year falls on 509 B.C.
