Guest guest
I saw an interesting discussion about SAMASRAYANA which is the babtism in srivaishnava tradition and any such a system in Sri Shanakaracharya's works. I like to share my views with the list members. 1. Srtictly speaking `Samasrayana' is not a vedic ritual but a one professed by the Vaishnava agama like the pancharatra agama etc. and hence a must for an aspirer to be initiated into the Agama School. The Bhagavatha School has been practising this for long. Such a similar samasrayana is seen in Saivates also, who are also followers of their Agamas. 2. Sri Shankarcharya is basically a Vaidika and NOT an Agamite. His mission was to uphold the Vedic tradition in its pristine pure form. Thus he HAS ADVOCATED the following of only Vedic and Smrithi rituals and duties and NOTHING MORE, as it is not necessary. Thus one does not find the panchasamskara ritual in the Vedic materials and hence, No Samasrayana etc is practised by a smartha. The only initiation necessary for a. vedic study - Upanayana & Brahmopadesa b. vedantic study - 4 prescribed qualifications Studious readers will be profited more if they refer to the tamil `Deivathin Kural' by H.H.Kanchi Paramacharya, volume 1,2 under the title `Shankara Sampradaya' thank you S.
