namaste.

Some thoughts on chapter 7 of the bhagavadgItA. While the

middle six chapters of the bhagavadgitA are usually said

to elucidate tat of tat tvam asi, they also deal with bhakti.

The humankind is dominated by the rajas of the three guNA-s,

(sattva, rajas and tamas). The main characteristic of rajas

is passion. We may say this translates into attraction towards

worldly matters and materials and also love towards people.

This leads to joy and sorrow. This passion transferred toward

Ishwara is called bhakti.

This bhakti is of two types: apara and para. aparabhakti is

when we consciously and with due practice keep our mind on

Ishwara and consciously develop bhakti. If unconsciously,

and on its own, the mind turns toward Ishwara and gets

immersed in that blissful union, it is called parabhakti.

For bhakti to be an integral part of us, there have to be

two essential ingredients: (i) to recognize the littleness

of the human and the greatness of Ishwara, and that anything

will take place only at Ishwara's command, and hence surrender

fully to Ishwara, (ii) by continually chanting Ishwara's names

and cognizant of Ishwara's immense pervasiveness, to develop

bhakti by continually confirming these experiences by shraddha.

This chapter of the bhagavadgItA deals with the all-encompassing

greatness of the Lord, classification of the bhaktA-s and other

related topics.
