Normally the fortnight of Pitr^paksha (krishNa paksha) ends with Mahalaya

Amavasya , and the

Navaratri (Durga Puja) starts from the following shukla Pratipad.

But this year (2001) , Navaratri begins only after the next amavasya (October

16). The period

of one month between the two amavasya-s is considered a "mala maasa" or adhika

maasa

which is inauspicious.

Can some scholar please explain the concept of adhika maasa ? How are the Lunar

months

calculated ? Will there be 13 months this year ?

Dear Shri Sunderhji,

I shall be grateful if you can provide a link to any website that explains the

different

Regional Hindu Calenders.

I remember some years ago there was a Calender Reform Committee in India who had

standardised

an Indian Calender ( Rashtriya Panchang) which the Govt of India follows since

1957. I would

also like to know whether and where I can access that Committee's Report.

Regards

VMS

Namaste Sundarji:

This excellent article by Sri Anand Hudli in Advaita List describes

calendar calculations in greater details.

You have requested from our best source, Sri Sunderji (one of list

moderators) and he will certainly provide you with appropriate

details. When you gather more information, please share them with the

list members.

warmest regards,
