HariOm!

Thank you for your question. The vedas were total 3 in the beginning i.e.

Rik, Sama and Yajurveda. Even in Bhagawad Gita it is said to be only three

vedas (trividyA mAM sOmapAH pootapApAH). Atharvana Veda came after long in

to practice. Atharvana Veda talks mostly about worldly things.

And you can find a pattern in Vedas. If you take 100 hymns in Rigveda, 75

out of them have been repeated in Samaveda, and 50 out of them repeated in

Yajurveda. So Rigveda must be not only in the beginning but also the sum

total of all vedas.

I think Rigveda speaks about the eternal truth; Sama tries to bring Joy out

of it (singing) and YAJUR veda tries to assemble the eternal truth in a

logical way so that humans can cognize it through their intellects.

Yours,

Madhava
