Guest guest
Dear Friends, I am sure some of you might have heard this story:- Once Lord Krishna and his consort Rukhmani were talking in Mathura on the banks of River Yamuna. Suddenly Lord Krishna informed Rukhmani that Sage Durvasa was waiting in the other shore and is writhing with Hunger. He requested her to go to the other shore with food and serve it to Sage Durvasa. Rukmani agreed but wanted to know how she will cross the River Yamuna. Krishna told her , tell the river that the Nithya Brahmachari(perennial bachelor) has ordered the river to give way. Rukhmani agreed and indeed the river gave way. She served food to the sage who partook a hearty meal and thanked her. Rukhmani told the sage that she has to cross the river again. The sage told her to tell the river that the Nithya Upavasi(a man who never took food in life) asked her to give way. Rukhmani followed the directions and reached back to her palace. When she met Lord Krishna, she asked him" How are you who has more than one hundred thousand wife , a Nithya Brahmachari and how is Sage Durvasa who took a hearty meal just then a Nithya Upavasi." Lord Krishna told her, " I am the Atman who is same as Brhman and I dont marry, and Sage Durvasa is again Atman who never eats. All these functions are done by the body. All of you who are decieved by the net of Maya think that I am my body and Sage Durvasa is his body. This is not true." This story clearly brings home the point that it is your belief or faith which makes you what you are.Befuddled in the net of illusion, if we decieve ourselves that you are the body and not the perennial Atman, You would indeed be the body. Guest guest
Namaste: Thanks for the excellent story illustrating "what is Maya?" Both Lord Krishna and Sage Durvasa were able to conduct the bodily actions such as eating, walking, talking, thinking, etc, without getting distracted. When we are detached we can free ourselves from the spell of Maya. But most of the time we are attahced to our bodily actions and fail to recognize our true identity. During deep sleep, we experience our True Identity and were able to liberate ourselves from the spell of 'Maya.' Our physical body never rests and it continues to act (cell production, digestion, etc.,) whether we sleep or awake. The message of Lord Krishna is sound and clear- Recognize the Real Identity of SELF and relinguish the mistaken identity of self (body-mind-intellect). The same message is emphasized again and again in the Bhagavad Gita by Lord Krishna. warmest regards, Ram Chandran Note: The Website address is correct and I have no problem in accessing the site. Guest guest
Dear All , In the story , Hope Lord Krishna has internally meant , I am neither a Brahmachari nor " not a brahmachari " . I am a Brahmachari , without a internal meaning " I am also not a Brahmachari" , may not be correct . please correct me if i am wrong . thanks umapathy - "P.R.Ramachander" <prr <advaitin> Tuesday, November 06, 2001 5:12 PM Maya > Dear Friends, > I am sure some of you might have heard this story:- > Once Lord Krishna and his consort Rukhmani were talking in Mathura on the banks of River Yamuna. Guest guest
Namaste All The group has moved on but I am still in the grip of mAyA. This post too gives a wonderful analogy of 'me' in room with 1000 distorting mirrors and few other good ones as well. Hope this is useful Many thousand Pranams to all advaitins Sridhar RamanaMaharshi, Nasrudin <nasrudin3> wrote: I stand in the centre of a hall of distorting mirrors. There are a thousand different people all around me. But it never occurs to me to look at myself. In my dreams, there are characters of many different types. One may even be 'me', but it is never the 'real I' that sleeps in a bed. My only path to liberation is through the others all around me in life. Yet there are no others. Ergo, I can never find liberation - which is proof that I never lost it. What a riddle, this maya! Simultaneously indispensible and non-existent. Without it there is no attainment, yet attainment is nothing else but it's disappearance! It is like the cocoon of the silkworm, who breaks his fast by devouring it. As Richard Bach puts it: "What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the Master calls a butterfly"."Argue for your limitations, and sure enough, they're yours".
