But there is a contradiction in the sense that many > people believe it to be a book of Bhakthi or believe that > reading it would give Punya. HarihOm! I know that Bhagawad Gita is also chanted in order to gain something, or to getrid of ailments etc... And when people have asked me what they could do in order to get rid of a problem, I suggested them to read perticular verses from particular chapters for perticular period of time, and it has worked. I believe it is the chanters belief in the Gita and the adviser which invokes the devine in them to correspond! > Gita is great , if we understand the meaning and use it to > choose our own path to understand the ultimate truth. This > does not make it a holy book but a book that would help us > understand our relegion and make us great human beings. About your question, anything that does good to the world is considered Holy. In Bhagawad Gita at the end of each chapter we also read "Om tatsat iti bhagavadgitasu upanishadsu, brahmavidyAyAM, yOgasAStrE..." Gita teaches us "Brahma vidya" the Royal/Supreme science, but it is also the "Yoga Sastra" means it teaches how to attain it. Tell me can you be able to concentrate, or live in peace when the society around you is disturbed? Nobody can! That is the reason why in puranas our Rishis used to take the help of the Emperors, when their peaceful world is disturbed by the deamons (eg. Vishwamitra and Lord Rama). Bhagawad Gita makes humans to realize their ultimate goal. But who are humans? They are society dwellers. That means they are dependent on each other in each and every aspect of their existance. A society flourises when everything is going smoothly. Our seers have identifed three major factors which can disturb the peaceful existance of a society. aadhidaivika (natural calamities), aadhibhoutika (problems caused by others), aadhyAtmika (mental problems of the individual). Though we have no command over the first calamity, we are able to get forewarning so that we can be on alert. But the rest two are most important. So Gita addresses these two and helps the humans to become "Better Humans", which ultimately leads to peace in society. A human who is living in such a peaceful society, becomes vibrant! His vision gets more focused inwards ,because he has less to think about the problems of the society. He become as told by Seers "aavRUtta cakshUH amRUtatva micchan" (becomes inward in aspiring immortality). In a nutshell, the less disturbed the society around you, the more chances you have to find peace. I believe Gita is constructing a beautiful building called "Liberation" by starting right from where the existance of society has started. In my opinion, Gita is a "Construction Map for liberation, and also a destruction map for the evil which disturbs the societys peaceful existance".
