Guest guest
Namaste Brian, A while ago you had posted your translation of some of the yoga sutras. I was wondering, how would you translate 2.22 - 2.25, I am having some difficulty with available translations. Other list members are also welcome. Thanks Best regards Shrinivas

Dear Brian, Many thanks for the intro. to this title. Some of the things I was going to say to you I have included on my reply to Martin but here are couple of titles you may find of interest....'The Vedic Experience' by Raimundo Panikkar. He is a Roman Catholic priest of Hindu/Spanish paentage so he is totally at ease in both cultures. In this book he has some chapters on the Mahavakyas although he uses a slightly different grouping to the four that I favour. My own choice is because I try to follow as closely as possible the Holy Tradition back through Adishankara, Govindapada and Gaudapada etc. Anthony de Mello is also good: 'Sadhana: a way to God'. Anything by Bede Griffiths...eg 'The Cosmic Revelation'.... whose Christian /advaitin ashram is near to Trichy in S. India. His life and that of a Belgian monk there, Dom Henri Le Saux, who took the name of Abhishiktaananda...'The Further Shore' and 'Prayer' and 'Saccidaananda' are wonderful books....fully demonstrate the problems of aligning Christian and advaitin teachings and practice. There is also a book on 'Vedanta and the Sermon on the Mount' which is true to advaitin teaching but it has de-manifested from my shelves at the moment and I cannot remember the name of the author although he was an Indian Swami. Hope that this is of use, Om sri ram ken Knight Find the one for you at Personals http://personals.

Guest guest
Namaste, "The Sermon on the Mount According to Vedanta" by Swami Paramananda is excellent. Also of interest is "The Yoga of the Christ-in the Gospel According to John "by Ravi Ravindra, born and schooled in India and professor and chair of comparative religion at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is published in 1990 by Element Books. The Gospel of John is full of knowledge of Advaita, as all these and the titles mentioned by Ken Knight indicate. Guest guest
As an example from "The Holy Science" I quote below: (from a discussion on Sat Chit Ananda) "How consciousness appears. With his heart thus contented, mans becomes able to fix his attention upon anything he chooses and can comprehend all its aspects. So Chit, Consciousness of all the modifications of Nature up to its first and primal manifestation, the Word (Amen, AUM) and even his own Real Self, gradually appears. And being absorbed in the stream thereof, man becomes baptised and begins to repent and return to his Divinity, the Eternal Father, whence he had fallen. See Revelation 2:5. 'Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent.' .... Man, being thus consecrated or anointed by the Holy Spirit, becomes Christ, the anointed Saviour. Entering the kingdom of the Spiritual Light, he becomes the Son of God. In this state man comprehends his Self as a fragment of the Universal Holy Spirit, and, abandoning the vain idea of his separate existence, unifies himself with the Eternal Spirit; that is, becomes one and the same with God the Father. This unification of Self with God is Kaivalya, which is the Ultimate Object of all created beings. See John 14:11. 'Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me.'" Finally, my favourite poet sums it up beautifully: "The roads are different, the goal is one ... When people come there, all quarrels or differences or disputes that happened along the road are resolved. Those who shouted at each other along the road 'You are wrong' or 'You are an unbeliever' forget their differences when they come there because there, all hearts are in unison." - Rumi
