Dear Greg, Nearly forty years ago I was wandering around the hills near Nainital when an Indian who was a Christian bishop gave me a Bible. I had left the Church as a teenager as it did not seem to agree with the pure communism that I then perceived in Christ's words. By the time the bishop was met I had discovered Nanak, Kabir, Sufi poetry and through the grace of Sri Anandamayee begun to hear the words of Vedanta. It was the insights of these traditions that opened the door to the Christian teaching beyond the dogma preached to me as a child. I had no desire to become a Christian, Sufi or Hindu but, years later, a role in setting up Interfaith groups appeared. I was able to use my own experience to help the members of each of the traditions 'deepen' the understanding of their own tradition by studying other traditons in the company of the followers of those faiths. Almost without exception they came to echo what Kaminetsky found. In the present climate it is very imporatnt that we bring the light of knowledge of all great teachings to the fore and I value greatly this site which enables this to happen. The title of this thread..the disease and the symptom.... now baffles me but on the way someone had posed the question as to whether other traditions had statements equal to the Mahavakyas and I had picked up on the possibility of the Gospel of St John's insights as in my own experiences. That had then sparked the line which you had picked up on. As always the list members have now given me a load of work to follow up just as my 18 year old pupils are coming up to their main examinations in Pure Maths.
