Guest guest
Namaste all, Today Sada, in a separate listing, used the word 'anirvachaniyam' in relation to that which is inexpressible. I am presently studying one aspect of the criteria for the mystical experience as defined by various academic disciplines in the West. This aspect is 'ineffability' which is listed by the majority of contributers over the last 200 years. Using my Sanskrit dictiuonary I came up with several words for 'ineffability' of which anirukta and anirvachaniiyah were two of the more accurate. I particularly liked this definition of anirukta...'because of being clear by itself.' Using Jacobs the following references for anirukta were Ch.Up. 1.13.3, 2.22.1 and Taitt.Up. 2.6.1, 2.7.1...all these refs having been relevant in other recent postings by many members of this site. I have found no refs. in Jacobs for anirvachanitam. As he does not include Shankara's writings in his concordance this is a possible reason. Two questions for the list members: Does anyone know of a concordance for Shankara's writings in English or Sanskrit? Does anyone know of other refs. to the above words or of other Sanskrit terms for 'ineffable' which means, as the characteristic of mystical experience: that which is beyond the power of words to describe although its experience gives rise to knowledge? I know of the Upadesha Sahasri verse 31: 'Words fall back from the Self together with the mind since it is without attributes and without particular characteristics.'(Taitt.Up. 2.9) This is the foundation of my little study. Any help would be much appreciated. The word 'anirvachaniiyam' does not occur in the 'mukhya' [main upanishads, but is used in the following upanishads [sadhale's Concordance [1940; in Sanskrit only]: maNDala-brahmaNa tripaad-vibhuuti-mahaa-naaraayaNa niraalamba yoga-tattva pai~Ngala gaNesha-uttara-taapinii [not in the 108 of Muktika list]. *************** > Two questions for the list members: > Does anyone know of a concordance for Shankara's > writings in English or Sanskrit? ************ There is a reference to this in one of the messages, but not cited completely. A.J. Alston is referred to as aompiler of Shankara's Sources; will need to look more closely into this. ************************************************ > Does anyone know of other refs. to the above words or > of other Sanskrit terms for 'ineffable' which means, > as the characteristic of mystical experience: that > which is beyond the power of words to describe > although its experience gives rise to knowledge? > I know of the Upadesha Sahasri verse 31: 'Words fall > back from the Self together with the mind since it is > without attributes and without particular > characteristics.'(Taitt.Up. 2.9) ************* Maitri, Vraha upanishads use the word: avaachyam; nR^isi.nha-taapinii : avaa~N-mano-gocharam Guadapada uses: akathyam ***************************** Regards, Sunder

Guest guest
Namaste Sunder, Thanks for this and the other mail which I will follow up. > This is the only reference I have found, and > it does not appear > to be complete! > > Alston, A.J.: Samkara on The Soul Dr Alston is a member of Shanti Sadan here in London and researched his PhD in Banaras Hindu University. About three years ago I wrote to him just before I went to Varanasi and the BHU to meet someone who shared one of my interests. Dr Alston is an excellent Sanskritist and advaitin and he has written a set of books on Adishankaracharya of which the above is one. We were going to meet up but he became seriously ill so we had to cancel the meeting. I will try to re-establish the contact, if he is still alive, so thank you for reminding me. If you wanted to follow up the link to Shanti Sadan try: shanti-sadan.org.uk This organisation was set up by H.P.Shastri of 'World Within Mind' fame as well as several other works. thanks for your help Om sri ram Ken Knight GeoCities - quick and easy web site hosting, just $8.95/month. http://geocities./ps/info1
Guest guest
Namaste Ken, Thanks for the lead! Their Book-shop does list Alston's 6-vol. work on Shankara; but I do not see any subtitle as a Concordance. http://www.shanti-sadan.org/Shop/index.htm Title Author Each Samkara - 6 vol set - Source Book Alston, Dr A J £48.00 A new approach to the texts of India's greatest philosopher and interpreter of the Upanishads. This work in six volumes brings together the main texts of Samkara, freshly translated and grouped systematically into topics. Each section is introduced by a passage of explanation, and the Notes aim to serve both the specialist and the general reader. Guest guest
Namaste Sunder, These books are excellently researched and I can recommend them to anyone. Individually they cost about $11. The only problem is that they do not have an index...why do serious authors not include an index with their work? This failing makes me forget all about advaita and jump up and down with frustration. Still, a little bit of rajas is necessary at times, Om sri ram Ken > Their Book-shop does list Alston's 6-vol. work on > Shankara; but I do > not see any subtitle as a Concordance. > > http://www.shanti-sadan.org/Shop/index.htm > > Title > Author > > Each > Samkara - 6 vol set - Source Book > Alston, Dr A J > > £48.00 GeoCities - quick and easy web site hosting, just $8.95/month. http://geocities./ps/info1
Guest guest
Namaste, To see the range of possibilities for an index, please see Edwin Arnold's translation of the Gita: http://www.intratext.com/ixt/ENG0045/_index.htm Regards, Sunder advaitin, ken knight <hilken_98@Y...> wrote: > > --- "N.K.BALI" <jaynkbali@r...> wrote: > > These days as u have rightly said index has become a > > must.Keeping in mind this requirement i am building > > up an index on bhagavad gita. > > > "http://in.geocities.com/gitabykrishna/index_index.html" > > you may kindly go through the same and let me know > > if some improvements are required. > > > Namaste, > Thank you for your work on this project which is of > great value to my friends to whom I have recommended > the site. Guest guest
Namaste Sunder, How did you manage to get a reply from Shanti Sadan before I did...indeed the great US wields mighty influence? Maybe they thought they would be targeted by a smart bomb. Sudden thought!!!! Instead of bombarding Afghanistan with wind-up radios fixed to a US propaganda wavelength we should drop tapes looped to repeat Laillahahillalah...my spelling probably wrong..which is a central mantra for Islam...'There is but one God'. Then we could have all the combatants literally brain-washed. Side thought over. These Gita refs are fun for their use of English.Eg. I was able to look up the word 'cottage' in the Gita..a word I had never met there before. The lectures on Gita/Pauline Epistles are also interesting how they reflect their time. This was the time when the small group of people in power in England tramped over the world, establishing their might. So much good work was done then in opening up the Vedas to the West...Germany was some way ahead then as probably now...although the main intention was to show the West how foolish were these Eastern scriptures. Some are more subtle in their message and some obviously fearful of the Church/state reaction so although the Gita is seen here 'As the perfect flowering of human thought' the seed of the Pauline Epistles will come to perfect fulfilment in the ages to come. This lecture appeared when I looked up Ahriman in the concordance and found a lecture on the comparison between the 'Christ Impulse and the Krishna Impulse'. Nowadays in the West we stand upon the shoulders of these great scholars to see much further and I wonder how they would view the present dialogues that we have. Some years ago I listed a number of books/translations of the Bhagavad Gita for students at a university where a friend lectures. I graded them for the level of interest of the reader. As we should not use attachements on this site I will send an attachment to your e-mail below. Enjoy the moment ken --- sunderh wrote: > Namaste, > > To see the range of possibilities for an index, > please > see Edwin Arnold's translation of the Gita: > > http://www.intratext.com/ixt/ENG0045/_index.htm > > > Regards, > > Sunder > > > > advaitin, ken knight <hilken_98@Y...> > wrote: > > > > --- "N.K.BALI" <jaynkbali@r...> wrote: > > > These days as u have rightly said index has > become a > > > must.Keeping in mind this requirement i am > building > > > up an index on bhagavad gita. > > > > > > "http://in.geocities.com/gitabykrishna/index_index.html" > > > you may kindly go through the same and let me > know > > > if some improvements are required. > > > > > > Namaste, > > Thank you for your work on this project which is > of > > great value to my friends to whom I have > recommended > > the site. > > GeoCities - quick and easy web site hosting, just $8.95/month. http://geocities./ps/info1
