However, I have found the commentry by shri Adi Shankaracharya which has been further explained by shri swamy chinmayanand jee and 'tatva vivechani' by shri jaydayal goyendaka to be very usefull The former is published by chinamayanand mission and the later by gita press gorakhpur I intend to include the summary of these at my site "http://in.geocities.com/gitabykrishna" you may visit this site and go to 'essence' section. Time being I have put in some summaries of commentries by 4 persons including those of mahatama Gandhi and Vinobha bhave. You may find them intersting. You will also find links to some good sites on Bhagavad Gita in the home page which should help you further. please also send me your commentrs about the site so that it can be improved further. thanking u jaynkbali On Sun, 25 Nov 2001 amaresh wrote : > Hi all, > I joined this forum recently and have been reading the > postings > with interest. Guest guest
Namaste Amaresh, The answer to your question is relative to the needs of the various readers. For a first time reader the translation by Yeats and Sri Purohit Swami is excellent for its poetic quality that helps the mind absorb the teaching. For an excellent introduction the translation and commentary by Swami Chidbhavananda introduces the main lines of Indian philosophy, explains the Sanskrit terms and has an excellent commentary. There is also an excellent publication by Winthrop Sargeant for someone who wants to approach the Gita through grammar as he has 'parsed' each verse. Only those who have an understanding of the six systems of Indian traditional philosophy will fully benefit from a translation of Adishankara's commentary and there are few of those in the modern world. The ones that I would recommend, that have Adishankara's commentary are those by Dr Krishna Warrier and another by V.Panoli. There are many many more which others will direct you to but these are the ones I suggest to people who ask this question in the UK.
