Dear Friends,

I have problems reading/ pronouncing the english transliteration of both Tamil

verses and Sanskrit slokas the way they appear in the emails exchanged in our

group(I can read original Tamil and Sanskrit comfortably). In the published

books atleast the convention is different. Is there a \'dictionary\' available

for deciphering our \'convention\' or am I missing the relevant fonts in my

computer. Can anyone help? Many thanks and regards,

Venkat

Namaste:

The entire ThiruvempAvai in Tamil (MYLAI font) is available at the

site below: It should be installed to view this page.

URL: http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Gulf/8000/padal/Tvch16.htm

ThiruvempAvai is written in dramatic form with full of emotional

expression of Bhakti. The village maidens sing in chorus early in the

morning and they go from house to house awakening their friends to God

and His glories. This awakening of the entire village girls proceed

as greater number of the girls join the group and go to the village

lotus pond. Their they dance and sing in groups to express their

deepest aspirations and praise Lord Shiva (Nataraja). The music is

melodious and rhythmic and the poem injects the higher philosophy to

the minds of the village girls. I agree with Subrmanianji that it is

almost impossible for anyone to provide the inner feelings of

Manickavasakar, the great Shiva Saint.

In these verses the village girl advises those girls who are still

sleeping in their bed to wake up and not to waste their precious time.

This is the time to see, sing and dance with the group of friends, the

glory of God. This is the time to make a request to the Lord to

provide us with the virtues of life that help us to reach Him as

stated in the Vedas.

I am hoping that Sri Subramanianji will provide his insights in

addition to just the translations.

Warmest regards,

Ram Chandran

Dear Sri Venkat,

The Tamil text put here is in the ITRANS format. The idea of that

is basically a common schema for all Indian languages (so that people

who have languages other than Tamil as mother tongue could also read

them). The transliteration schema followed is available at

http://www.shaivam.org/untralit.htm. But I understand that it is

quite difficult to read with the lower and upper case letters. You

could download directly the pdf in Tamil from this site

http://www.shaivism.org/pal.htm.

Hope it helps.

Namaste,

The following URL will help in converting Itrans to many other

Indian languages, including Tamil, with choice of font size, 1 or 2

columns, saving the output in various formats [ps, pdf, html, gif]

http://www.aczone.com/itrans/online/index_form.php3

Dear Sri Narendar,

The concept that is being conveyed through the 20 beautiful songs of

thiruvempAvai is that the Lord Shiva - the Unexplorable One, comes

on "His own" to bless the devotees out of His Boundless Grace, so let

us not sleep (in ignorance) and lose out this great boon, but fix the

mind in Him and get benefitted.

The "pAvai nOnbu" is observed by the girls to get the right husband.

In thiruvempAvai the pashus observe this vrata to get the association

with pati - the Supreme.

In this specific song, the devotee friends, who also observe the

pAvai vrata, alarm the girl still lying on the bed that it is already

dawn - it is time to go for the worship of the Supreme. But the girl

on the bed not willing to sacrifice the comfort of morning sleep,

responds, "Have everybody else come ?" But the devotee friends who

have converged their complete focus on the Beautiful Lord, Peerless

Supreme, the Lord hailed by vedas, tell her very clearly that their

attention is completely on the Sweet Supreme and if she wants she

herself could count them and if they are less continue her sleep !!

Apart from the beautiful narration of the bhakti of the devotees,

this song has a very good message for us. Many times we are like the

girl, who is unwilling to get up. It is not that we do not have

devotion. If that is the case she would not have got into the company

of these devotees. But it is just that the mind is not leaving out

the comfort to come for worship. Many times it happens, as long as

the worship is without sacrificing any comfort it is agreeable. But

the moment it becomes a service or the worship that requires some

strict discipline we find all possible lame excuses for not doing.

(In my opinion this is often the reason people show up a rationalist

face. While there are a few who really put effort in questioning

religious philosophies, the most others are pure materialists who

unwilling to observe the practices, just live under the rationalist

mask.)

The beautiful positive point to note is the firm reply by the devotee

friends. Like them we should not be turned away from the focus on the

Lord even if the dearest company doesn't come along, but still make

sincere effort to get all the company benefitted by taking them to

the worship of the Supreme.
