Dear All,

With grace of god, i plan to post the one verse daily from the Vivekachudamani

of Sri Adi Shankaracharya.

if possible i will also give the english translation of Sri Sri Chandrasekara

Bharathi Mahaswaminah, who had actually written the meaning of Vivekachudamaniit

in sanskrit

Hari Om !!

It is my opinion that posting the verses of Vivekachoodamani will not

serve any purpose for this group. Any serious seeker must read the

entire Vivekachoodamani in any case. So, posting a verse a day will

take about 1 1/2 years. The thread can not be tracked with any

practical use and ease, either. It will not meet the progress

desired. Also, there are several commentaries available in the

market.

I would suggest that you can open a common folder and enter the text

and authentic commentary which can be referred by those interested.

Then it will become a valuable resoource for all.

Also, it will not be correct to just upload the published

commentaries without the publisher's consent. We, as spiritual

seekers have the basic responsibility to respect the oweners of their

contribution.

I was wondering if there was an approval from Chinmaya Mission to

upload the commentary of Swami Chinmayananda on Bhagavad Gita. It may

be more appropriate to send the commentary to CMT and have them put

up as part of their web site, and we should provide a link with their

approval. It will exhibit our respect to the Swami's work.

It may be worth while to enter some discussion based on the

Vivekachoodamani contents under its own subject. If participents

raise genuine questions based on their reading and not speculation,

it will be useful for one and all. Mere academic questions will put

off many group members and will defeat the purpose.

Hari Om!

This is to just inform everyone that we do have permissions from Chinmaya

Mission (ref: Approval letter received by me from Sri Narayan Bhatia, Chief

Executive, CCMT). We also have permissions from Rakrishna Mission and other

great saints like Swamy Dayanandaji to use their texts (upload) on this forum

for the sake of spiritual discussion.

Yours,

Namaste Srikrishnaji:

Some of the points that you have raised regarding the posting of

verses of Vivekachoodamani and Bhagavadgita needs more careful

scrutiny before jumping into conclusions. Books, tapes and other media

are readily available on most of the topics that we have discussed in

this list. The purpose of all our discussions is to transfer the

knowledge from the knowledgeable members to the seekers of that

knowledge. The flow of any knowledge is multi-dimensional and with

interaction between members, knowledge gets enhanced.. The providers

of knowledge and receivers of knowledge are never stagnant and they

interact and exchange. This forum forces the rs to open their

mail box and read the messages of their choice. Some messages get

deleted from the mailbox and from the mind quickly, others force the

mind to open up and get absorbed. Some messages get more interaction

and others get ignored!

Every author is responsible for the accuracy of the message that is

posted on the list and he/she is obligated to get permission from the

original authors. The authors of the postings are also responsible to

provide appropriate references and also provide clarifications when

questions are raised.

Sri Madhavaji, a fellow moderator has already clarified regarding Gita

Satsang potings on this list. I want to assure you that the list has

obtained permissions from the original authors and/or appropriate

institutions for posting relevant materials from books and/or home

pages. As a matter of fact, the list got blessings from Kanchi

Acharya, Swami Atmanandaji of Vedic Mission, Swami Tejomayanandaji,

the Head of Chinmaya Mission and several others for providing the

service of Vedanta discussions.

As a list moderator, I want to commend the offer from Sri Kamalesh to

post one verse a day. I know quite a few members of the list are

looking forward to read a verse a day as their daily routine. As a

minimum, this will motivate the readers of such verses to get more

interest in Vedanta, Vivekachoodamani and other works of Shankara.

Every member who s to this list does not have access to

internet site and many may not have books. All postings and

discussions of this list will certainly help few members to learn some

new topics of Vedanta and will become a motivational force. I am of

the opinion, Sri Kamalesh shuld be encouraged to post the verses with

appropriate translations and commentaries. He should also provide

appropriate references for further readings and for clarifications.

Others who want to help Sri Kamalesh should contact and provide

necessary help.

I also request Srikrishnaji to provide his ideas and suggestions for

improving and enhancing the service of advaitin list. Please feel free

contact me or other moderators with your ideas and we are looking

forward.

warmest regard,

Hari Om !!

As we all know Vivekachoodamani is a Prakarana Grantha. Undoubtedly

it is one of the most significant works for a seeker. I was only

proposing that if we go with one verse a day, it takes such a long

time that it is unlikely to deliver the result required for a seeker.

Let us look at an alternative. In Swami Chinmayananda's commentary

the verses are grouped by the nature of the subject dealt with, into

77 groups. Because the thought is continuous and complete when we

deal with them in such logical groups, it is likely to deliver better

results.

I also mentioned that there are many commentaries available in the

market. If we use these postings as a main location, the effort will

get diluted and the greater benefit will be lost, as the commentary

is not traceable in any order. Also the original authors presentation

will get mixed with our(my) layman's views.

Instead if we post it separately in a folder, and reserve the

discussion to provide clarifications for the questions that come up,

it will provide more value. This was my opinion. Personally, I have

questions on some topics. If different people address them based on

their understanding, I am likely to learn form others views. I

extrapolated this to others.

Namaste Srikrishnaji:

Thanks for your constructive suggestion on the posting of

Vivekachoodamani. Sri Krishna Prasad, Sri Vaidya Sundaram, Sri Kamesh

and several others have expressed their keen interest in

Vivekachoodamani and are likely to cooperate with you if you agree to

be the coordinator of this effort.

We are all volunteers who want to help the members to enhance their

knowledge on this important of Shankara. Here is an opportunity for

you undertake this important project. I also request Sri Krishna

Prasad, Sri Vaidya Sundaram, Sri Kamesh and several others who want to

help Srikrishnaji to contact him soon. Let us conduct the rest of the

managerial discussions through individual emails instead of through

the list. I agree that it will be more beneficial with a planned

effort as described by you.

Before proceeding further, I further request you to write to Sri

Sadanandaji, the chief moderator of the list. He will certainly

provide you with valuable comments and suggestions. Sri Sadanandaji is

very familiar with Swami Chinmayandaji's commentary on

Vivekachoodamani.

Having initiated a discussion on how to make this Vivekachoodamani

posting a useful resource for now and the future, I can not refuse

your proposal.

Though it is not an easy responsibility, I accept this as the will of

the Lord Narayana.

Hi Kamesh,

It will be very good to get a posting of Sankara's Vivekachudamani

with the learned commentary of Sri Chandrasekara Bharati

Mahaswaminah. I was interested to find out that there is a web-site

with the slokas and commentary.

http://www.advaita-vedanta.org/series/viveka/vivekachudamani_top.htm

Unfortunately there are only 38 verses on this site..

Sundar Rajan
