Guest guest
Do you accept the existence of physical objects, which common sense says (mistakenly) exist unpercieved, beyond and apart from the observer? If you do, then it is very understandable that you do not accept non-dualism. If you do not accept the existence of physical objects, then perhaps the thinking behind that could be used as an analogical approach to nonduality. External objects stand in the same relation to the mind as any object stands in relation to consciousness. Perhaps you have read them, but two good books that punch holes in the external physical object idea are: ON HAVING NO HEAD, by Douglas Harding and THREE DIALOGUES BETWEEN HYLAS AND PHILONOUS, by George Berkeley --Greg At 09:53 PM 1/26/02 +0000, orbitsville wrote: >I have been investigating Buddhism, Hinduism, Zen, >New Age, No Head, etc., theology for some years now. > >What it comes down to is this: > >Do I accept non-dualism? > >The answer is no. Guest guest
I first read 'On Having No Head' in about 1997. I was absolutely entranced by it. It reopened a door for me, and restored 'magic' to the world (in the sense of childlike wonder). Afterwards, I continued to study the usual texts, including mysticism, (eastern and western) and philosophy (including an introduction to Berkeley), Taoism, Buddhism, Zen etc, etc. The trouble is that after all this reading (and thinking and ruminating), things just did not seem to fall into place. I had two great moments in this time, one in which my whole world was deconstructed, and I had no place to stand, and another in which I felt God Himself to give me a Hug. Powerful events. I am a much calmer person now, much more peaceful. And my head is so quiet - I remember when thoughts used to rage through my mind - but no longer (thank God). However, I cannot but help feel that Advaita/No Head is basically stating that everything that happens is the will of God (or Tao or Universal Mind or whatever). My survival instinct prevents me from believing this, because, if this is true, there is no point in being here in this wretched place, and I might as well end it now. =========== orbitsville advaitin, "Madhava K. Guest guest
Hari Om !! You are right .. Every thing happens by the will of God, and YOU ARE THAT GOD. That is what Advaita states. Guest guest
Namaste! You find this place wretched. So, you do have a problem. And that is sufficient impetus too to look around for a solution. An advaitin accepts this place without reservations and sees only Cosciousness (Himself) in everything experienced. He is happy in whatever situation he is, for he knows that he himself is happiness. Therefore, advaita certainly has the key to your problem. I am sure you can easily find it without the help of all that you have so far read and assimilated. Best wishes for the success of your quest and best regards. M.R.
